Oh MY Oakridge: Upgrading Our Community Greenspaces

Oh MY Oakridge: Upgrading Our Community Greenspaces The Oh MY Oakridge (OMO) initiative was created when a small group of residents began discussing updating a playground near their homes.

A subcommittee of the Oakridge Community Association trying to revitalize and connect all greenspaces in Oakridge in order to create a more desirable and livable neighbourhood. This conversation led to a broader discussion about the age of all playgrounds, and the lack of diversity in greenspaces for the range of demographics within Oakridge. As a subset of the Oakridge Community Association (OCA), the OMO Team has been partnering with Parks Foundation Calgary and fundraising for two projects: The Master Plan Project & the Oakridge Way Park Project. The objective of the Master Plan Project is to hire a landscape architecture firm to develop a cohesive design for the revitalization of Oakridge’s greenspaces following a series of community engagement sessions. This plan will include community input into project prioritization which the OCA can then take to develop a long-term implementation strategy. As the first upgrade to one of the neighborhood’s greenspaces, the Oakridge Way Park Project intends to replace the aging playground structures with a new, natural-style playground equipment along with the installation of seating in the park area and pathway access from the sidewalk. Due to the cost of playground equipment, landscaping, a pathway and seating, this has been planned as a multi-phase update. The first phase is building new playground structures, with the goal to be completed in 2024. The second phase intends to add a shade structure, increase the seating and, in collaboration with the City, improve accessibility into the park, with anticipated completion in 2026. You can donate to either of these projects via the Parks Foundation Calgary website at: Parks Foundation Calgary https://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/ParksFoundationCalgary/communityprojects.html

The Oakridge Greenspace Community Survey is LIVE!

Our dream for this survey is to hear from as much of Oakridge as possible!

The whole point of the Greenspace Master Plan is to create a shared vision for the future of our parks, pathways and open spaces based on what our community actually values, needs and would like to see.

The survey was designed by the landscape architects leading our Master Plan to gather initial insights into how Oakridge residents use our greenspaces today and what you envision for their future. The results will be analyzed and used to help guide our upcoming community workshops, with the first one planned for early November.

The survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes, depending on your answers, and is open September 10 to October 10.

As a little thank you, everyone who completes the survey will have the option to enter a draw to win one of three $100 gift cards to local businesses!

Survey link: https://arcg.is/HTe882

Please fill it out — and then help us spread the word throughout Oakridge! Send it to your neighbours and other Oakridge residents you know, or mention it to someone on your street who might not follow us online. The Master Plan will be so much more meaningful if we hear from a large and diverse cross-section of our community.

Know someone in Oakridge who might need help completing the survey online? Please lend them a hand, or email [email protected] and we’ll arrange for a volunteer to help.

Can we make Oakridge the most engaged community ever? Let’s try!

Exciting news for Oakridge — our Greenspace Master Plan is officially underway!

This summer, the Oakridge Community Association contracted a landscape architecture firm to help develop a long-term vision for Oakridge’s parks, pathways and open spaces — based on what our community actually wants and needs.

Now we need your help!

Community input is at the heart of the Master Plan, and over the coming months we’ll need lots of volunteers to help us hear from as many Oakridge residents as possible.

Our first volunteer opportunity is helping with park observations using SOPARC, a simple tool that helps us understand how our greenspaces are being used today. Volunteers will spend short periods observing a nearby park and recording things like how many people are there, what activities they’re doing and which areas are being used.

Observations will take place three days per week over a two-week period at different times of day. This may be especially easy if you live close to one of Oakridge’s parks or greenspaces and can incorporate an observation into your normal day.

Volunteer training will be held virtually on September 10 at 6:30 pm. The workshop is one hour and no previous experience is needed.

Interested? Email [email protected] to volunteer or join our Master Plan mailing list.

🦷 Sponsor Spotlight: West Peaks Dental Suite

We recently stopped by West Peaks Dental Suite, one of our original Gold Sponsors, for a look around their clinic.

Jocelynn took us on a tour through the office, and we loved how bright, modern, and welcoming the space feels. More importantly, everyone we met was incredibly friendly and approachable—the kind of people who make a dental visit feel a little less daunting.

We're grateful to have West Peaks Dental Suite supporting the Oakridge Run from the early years and helping us continue to grow this community event.

Thank you to the entire West Peaks team for your support and for making patients feel right at home.

Platinum Sponsor Spotlight: Bobby Clark

We recently met up with Bobby Clark at a local park to chat about his real estate business, his commitment to the community, and his long-standing support of the Oakridge Run.

The weather definitely kept things interesting—rain on, rain off, rain on again. But that's June in Calgary! 😄

What stood out most was hearing about the many ways Bobby gives back, from supporting local initiatives to coaching kids' sports. His passion for community is evident in everything he does.

Bobby has been with the Oakridge Run from the beginning as one of our original supporters, and we're incredibly grateful for his continued partnership year after year.

Thank you, Bobby, for helping make Oakridge Run possible and for all you do to strengthen our community.

See you on June 20!

This week, we also had the pleasure of visiting Jessica from Budget Blinds of West Calgary & Cochrane, the proud sponsor of our Free Kids 1K at this year's Oakridge Run.

Jessica welcomed us into her home and gave us a tour of some of the beautiful window coverings she helps bring to homes across Calgary and Cochrane. From stylish shades to elegant blinds, every room felt thoughtfully designed and inviting.

To be honest, by the end of the visit, we were all ready to book an appointment ourselves! 😊

We're incredibly grateful to Jessica and Budget Blinds for supporting the Oakridge Run and helping us keep the Kids 1K free for families in our community.

Thank you for your generosity, your enthusiasm, and for being part of what makes this event so special.

See you on June 20!

This week, we stopped by Strides Running Store in Marda Loop to chat with Jeremy and learn more about the people behind one of our Platinum Sponsors.

We're grateful for their support of the Oakridge Run and for taking the time to share their story with us.

If you're training for the Oakridge Run, thinking about getting started, or simply looking for expert advice, be sure to check them out.

Thank you, Jeremy and the entire Strides team, for helping make the Oakridge Run possible!
