By the Banks of the Bow

A striking tribute to Calgary’s Western spirit, By the Banks of the Bow features 15 horses and two cowboys, blending historical and contemporary imagery into a larger-than-life bronze narrative. Inspired by the influence of the Bow River and the enduring legacy of the cowboy, the sculpture celebrates one of humanity’s greatest living treasures-the horse. With strength, speed, and dependability, horses have supported First Nations peoples, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, farmers, prospectors, ranchers, and cowboys throughout history.

Today, the horse remains at the heart of the Calgary Stampede, from the Rodeo and Chuckwagon Races to Heavy Horse competitions and the show ring. Created by local artists and ranchers Bob Spaith and Rich Roenisch, this sculpture reflects Calgary’s past, present, and future while honouring the deep community spirit of Stampede.

This sculpture is part of the Calgary Stampede’s Public Art Collection, which celebrates Western heritage, living cultures, and shared histories through art.
