The older I get, the more I realize the women in breaks are why I fell in love with the culture.
Not because they were trying to be the loudest person in the room, but because they were always building community. There was always a homegirl hyping up a homie, sharing opportunities, introducing people, making space for others to shine.
I came for the breaks. I stayed for the people.
That’s the real history I learned. I might never be the one to carry on the torch for breaks in my city, but I’m fu***ng proud to see them perform. It’s a thing of culture. 💐
