We sure love seeing the exploring their habitat! 🥰 One of the habitat features we love watching our male grizzly cubs ‘Turner’ (darker cub) and ‘Fitz’ (lighter cub) explore are the tunnels. If you’ve ever seen our adult black bears in these tunnels, you can see how small our cubs are in comparison when they go inside! 🥹

These tunnels in the habitat are the perfect place to enjoy some shade or catch a snooze. In wintertime, the cubs will use them as dens for their torpor sleep. Stop by to see them explore in ! 🐻

Someone in Penguin Plunge has a hatchday! Our male Humboldt penguin ‘Enrique’ is nine today! 🎉

Did you know that Humboldt penguins don’t migrate? ✈️ That’s because the weather in their native South America range is warm year-round! ☀️

We have great news from the Jihad Shibley Rocky Mountain Aviary! Our great grey owls ‘Alysanne’ and ‘Benjen’ have welcomed three hatchlings to their nest! 🪺

The owlets hatched between April 26 and May 2 and remain under the watchful care of their experienced parents. 💕 To support the family during this important stage of development, the Jihad Shibley Rocky Mountain Aviary is currently closed. In the meantime, stay tuned for updates and join us in welcoming these three chicks in the comments! 🦉

Early Zoo Closure Alert 📢 Last entry to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo will be at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5th, to accommodate set up for our Zoo Brew (18+) event. Last entry to Destination Africa will be at 3:30 p.m. and the zone will be closed by 4:30 p.m. The remainder of zoo grounds will be cleared by 5:30 p.m. Thank you for your understanding. 🍺

Do you know what today is? It’s International Day for Biological Diversity! 🌿

This year’s theme focuses on acting locally for global action. 🌎 Across Canada, we’re making a difference for our nation’s incredible biodiversity with the Wilder Canada Action Plan. In Canada, there are 662 at-risk plant and animal species listed under the Species at Risk Act (SARA), and nearly 300 of these—including mammals, birds, fish, plants, and lichens—have been identified as priorities for potential conservation action. 🫶

The Wilder Canada Action Plan is our roadmap to recovery for Canada’s at-risk species. Grounded in community, it uses targeted, species-specific conservation actions nationwide to safeguard wildlife and wild places. 💚

As we celebrate the first birthdays of our two male wood bison calves this month, we’re taking a moment to appreciate just how much they have grown. 🥰

You might not think of animals this big as being graceful, but whether they are playfully prancing or zooming at top speeds, wood bison are light on their hooves. Did you know that wood bison can reach speeds of 64 kilometres per hour? 💨

Important Announcement 📢 The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza within 200 kilometres of the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo.

The health and well-being of the animals in our care remains our top priority. Out of an abundance of caution, we’re proactively implementing the following measures to protect our avian species:

🐧 Penguin Plunge and the Rainforest Aviary have foot baths at entrances for guests to use
🦉 The Jihad Shibley Rocky Mountain Aviary is closed until further notice
🦩 Birds will continue to have outdoor access where appropriate and weather permitting

Our dedicated Animal Care, Health & Welfare team will continue to monitor the situation and prioritize the health and well-being of the animals in our care. Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work to keep the animals we all care about safe. ❤️
