Here's another look into our projects.
This time we get off on the Left foot with . We speak to the Writer/Director and the talented production designer on bringing this drama to life.
Writer/Director Tuesday Cook began development of Left Shoe way back in 2020, in the beginning of the COVID lockdown and a full year before our group began our journey at SAIT. "Like many others, I was left with nothing to do during the pandemic and I spent my days drawing and painting. I was listening to a live stream one day and the people on air loosely mentioned “what if there was a story about a kid in a gang family and the family tries to hide it from them?” I was fascinated by the idea. From there I started world and character building, who is the child, who is their family, how are they treated, is there a rival? I became very hyper fixated on this story drawing multiple characters in different scenarios and my film “Left Shoe '' only scratches the surface of what I have built."
"I have always been a fan of dark, psychological thrillers and I wanted to incorporate that in my film. I love the idea of having a dark concept that also has bright, child-like themes to it, so having Gorgina stand out from her surroundings was very crucial. This project is like a baby to me, I’m super proud of myself and the team for making a few silly drawings into an intriguing short film. When I drew my characters, I never thought anything would come from it and now I have a super rad live action film!"
The talented Production Designer Catherine McDonald was tasked with creating the crime house, special effects makeup for a ghost and even build a bloody arm from scratch! "Making the fake arm was a long process but it was a fun learning experience. I took wire from a coat hanger to create the skeleton, then created a paper mâché around it to add some meat to it. After many layers of that I painted it and blooded it up, and I think it’s a really fun prop!"
As for the ghost effects, "The makeup for Jisha was fun to do. I bought a fake scar from a SFX store, and used makeup I already had to make him look bruised. With the help of Agnes, we used glue, tissue and lots of foundation and fake blood to try and make it realistic each shoot day. It was a long process to recreate the same look every shoot day, but it was worth it because it adds even more character and contrast to Gorgina’s world!"
See at the on August 18th!
