Fun – joyful – funny – jazzy – Swing - This groundbreaking ensemble is redefining the traditional boundaries of Yiddish music, blending classical mastery with innovative compositions and soulful arrangements.

The Clarinetist this evening is the PRINCIPLE CLARINETIST OF THE TORONTO SYMPHONY!!

Also featuring Drew Jurecka – 2026 GRAMMY AWARD WINNER!!

What happens when five of Canada’s most decorated chamber musicians decide to have a little fun? You get Schmaltz & Pepper — a wildly entertaining quintet that spins Eastern European Jewish folk traditions into something entirely, irresistibly their own.

The band brings together Eric Abramovitz, principal clarinetist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra; Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist and arranger Drew Jurecka; virtuosic violinist, vocalist, and composer Rebekah Wolkstein; JUNO-nominated bassist Michael Herring; and JUNO award-winning pianist Jeremy Ledbetter.

Their repertoire is almost entirely original — drawing on Yiddish swing, jazz, Roma music, and classical sensibilities — with songs that range from a reimagining of the Judgment of Solomon (which somehow ends as an Irish reel) to an apologia for dating too many musicians. Critics have called them “inventive, adventurous, experimental” and “an unbelievable feat of creativity,” and their shows have sold out from Toronto to Winnipeg to Newfoundland.

Come prepared to tap your feet, raise an eyebrow, and leave humming something you’ve never quite heard before.

Payadora is an award-winning chamber music ensemble that performs original compositions as well as original arrangements of a core repertoire, drawing from Argentinian/Uruguayan Tango and Folk music. Made up of a group of players who are each musical powerhouses in their own right, this “superstar group” has combined their deep knowledge of tango with their classical, jazz and world music backgrounds to create something entirely new. Payadora is officially endorsed by the Argentinian Consulate in Toronto for its adherence to the spirit of tango. Their performances convey joy, convey joy, virtuosity, humour and their intense passion for the music that they play.

The program is titled "From South to Vienna" and will take listeners on a journey from Spanish keyboard music to the Viennese Classic Style through the work of a forgotten composer – Manuel Blasco de Nebra. The inspiration behind this programme is the forgotten music of Spanish composer from Sevilla, Manuel Blasco de Nebra (1750-1784). The heir to Scarlatti in many respects, he was moreover a composer well aware of what was happening elsewhere in Europe in the 1770s. When he died his sisters sold an impressive collection of 1833 pieces for harpsichord, organ and pianoforte – 172 pieces being his own works, the rest were pieces by German, Italian and French composers. His expressive world is far more searching than Scarlatti, a quality that sometimes reminds us of the music of Mozart and Haydn and pre-announces Schubert and even Chopin.

Ms. Pelliciolli will perform works by Scarlatti, Mozart, M. Blasco de Nebra, and Schubert.

Quartet Malamatina
Saturday, April 5, 2025 – 7:30 pm
Great Hall – St. James Anglican Church – 6025 Old Church Road, Caledon East

Known for their “immensely colourful, lyrical and expressive playing” (Laura Snowden), Quartet Malamatina first formed for a performance at the 2021 UN Climate Conference.

Current season highlights include concerts throughout Canada and the UK, performing for BBC Radio Scotland, The Worshipful Company of Musicians, Beacon Arts Centre, Carlisle Cathedral, Ottawa Guitar Society, Guitar Society of Toronto, and KW-Chamber Music Society. They have also undertaken artist residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Yellow Barn (VT), and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland which have included mentorship from members of the Kronos Quartet, Gryphon Trio, Anders Astrand, Tom Allen, Dinuk Wijeratne, and David Watkin.

Amidst these performances, Malamatina gave world-premiere performances of newly-commissioned works by Marco Galvani and Erin Thomson, thanks to generous support from Creative Scotland and the PRS Foundation. The Quartet also worked with conductor-composer Martyn Brabbins (English National Opera) in a performance of his piece, Sometimes You Can Hear the Birds Sing – the work’s first outing since 1984.

Building upon the culturally diverse and long-standing traditions of guitar ensemble music, the Quartet reaches new audiences through a range of commissioning, arranging, multidisciplinary collaboration, and community engagement activities.

Equally comfortable on the concert stage as in the local community centre, Quartet Malamatina takes a socially-conscious approach to programming and presentation, sharing the expressive potential of concert music and forging new audiences in the process.
