Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day tomorrow, June 20, from 1-5 pm, at Civic Square!🎉

The event has activities for the whole family including our mobile printing station, BAG on a Bike, which features a newly commissioned artwork “Wolf and Weaving” by Coast Salish artist Atheana Picha . She states:

“This artwork is about the power of family, biological and chosen, and how even when we aren't around them physically, we know we are still wrapped in the love and care of our family and ancestors.”

Atheana Picha is a Coast Salish artist from the Kwantlen First Nation, and her grandmother is from Tsartlip First Nation on Vancouver Island. She carries the name Xwii Xwa from her late Uncle Shane Pointe, and the name Nash'mene'ta'naht from Gerry Oleman. These names mean Echo and Go-getter woman. She works in many mediums such as wool weaving, wood carving, painting, and drawing. Atheana has shown work internationally in England and the USA and is a two-time recipient of the YVR Art Foundation Emerging Artist Scholarship.

💥We are thrilled to announce a new basketball court mural designed by artist Angie Quintanilla Coates at Willingdon Heights Park!🏀

Join us on June 27, 11–4 pm at Day of Play at Willingdon Heights Park to celebrate the grand opening of the new mural. The event will feature youth basketball camps, music, food trucks, art activities, outdoor games, ice cream and more!

The mural design led by Burnaby Public Art Roster artist Angie Quintanilla Coates engaged more than 40 youth. Through design input sessions, youth shared their visual references, ideas about basketball and community, preferred colour palettes, and the emotions they want to experience while playing. The mural was created in collaboration with Buckets & Borders, Burnaby Public Art, and Burnaby Youth.

About the artist:
Angie Quintanilla Coates is a visual artist born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, based in Port Moody, BC. Inspired by Mexican tile design and folk art, repetition plays a central role in her practice. She uses it not only as a visual structure, but to build movement, rhythm, and connection. In her work, colour becomes a language, one that’s both cultural and deeply personal. Rooted in her Mexican heritage, known for its unapologetic, defiant optimism, and shaped by her own path toward healing, her pieces become conversations in that language. Through shape and colour, she extends an open invitation to pause, celebrate, and experience what she likes to call dopamina mexicana.

Thank you to all who joined us for the opening of "Trophies" by Myfanwy MacLeod . It was a particularly special evening with music by neo-psychedelia brother duo Malcy and many friends new and old celebrating the newest exhibition and the accompanying full-colour publication. We hope you enjoyed the beautiful summer evening as much as we did.

Engaging Burnaby Art Gallery's history as a former fraternity house through research of the site, Myfanwy MacLeod's "Trophies" examines the connections between ancient Greek rites and sculpture and the visual and performative codes of contemporary fraternity culture, proposing new narratives. The exhibition is on view from until August 30, 2026. Click the link for more info: https://ow.ly/9wTe50Zc4q7.

Explore the unique story of Chinese Canadian history unfolding on the grounds of Deer Lake Park!

Featured in the brochure created for the public artwork “Hak Chu/Pak Chu” by Nathan Lee is the comic “Chance Encounters: Journey of a Pak Chu,” which brings together Lee’s writing with illustrations by Marlene Yuen . The comic celebrates how a modest and playful object such as the chu game piece can reveal the history of a specific place and become an artwork that lives on into the present day.

View the brochure online or pick up a free physical copy at the front desk, available in English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese, and wander through Century Gardens, encountering 40 cast-concrete, enlarged chu game pieces that celebrate the rich history of migration, perseverance, and many lives who have shaped these grounds.

This summer, let your child’s imagination run wild in full colour! 🎨☀️

Our summer camps focus on art techniques and creative imagination, encouraging children to hone their visual literacy skills while playing with the materials and tools of a professional artist! Led by artists and makers, these camps will teach children skills in printmaking, painting, collage, sculpture and more. Each week focuses on a different theme to spark imagination:

⭐ Down in the Dirt (ages 4-6): July 6-10
⭐ Days of Colour (ages 6-8): July 13-17
⭐ Art in Nature (ages 9-12): July 20-24
⭐ Find It, Make It (ages 6-8): July 27-31
⭐ Art Investigators (ages 9-12): August 4-7
⭐ Art Unusual (ages 6-8): August 10-14

Space in the camp is always fluctuating, so we encourage parents to register for the waitlists to signify interest. If a spot opens, we will get in touch!
