A little colour shifted with the bleaching process, but this Polaroid is one of my favourite shots I’ve taken. It’s always a tricky thing photographing kids, so I was very clear with what I was doing and told them they could have the Polaroid when I was done. The dad was so happy he offered to pay me for the shot. I a little taken off guard, I’ve had a few shows and sold prints, but it’s still shocking to me that people want to pay for my stuff. So much so, that I forgot to get a photo of the instant, thank god for the negs and bleach.

I exchanged the 4x5 Polaroid I took of him for an abstract painting. He was trying to paint the feelings, thoughts and essence of a moment. I figured that it was a good trade, his vision of the essence of a moment for mine. That’s what photography is for me, it’s how I see the world in a given instance. No one else can take exactly the same photo because no one else is me. That’s one of the reasons I love instant photography, it’s a one off of that exact moment.
I also have to give a shout out to Louis Mendes, who changed my outlook on photography, and inspired my dive into polaroids. And also to who does this so well and makes it look effortless.
