The new “Canoe Perspectives” exhibit features canoe based art spanning back 200 years along with some other cool exhibits to help bring the art on the walls to life
The painting beside me in the first picture is why I was asked to make this waagikomaan, I believe the museum wanted to show visitors what tool the skilled craftsman in the painting was using as well as a nod to where the canoe comes from
It all starts with an axe and tree but a crooked knife/waagikomaan/mocotaugan is a crucial part of the process for indigenous craftspeople of the past and present for birch bark canoe building and other crafts
My waagikomaan is also sharing the space with a birch bark basket by the skilled as well as an old canoe by a personal hero of mine, César Newashish.
