Brantford Cabaret

Brantford Cabaret Brantford Cabaret Musical Theatre Workshops & Performances. Since 2004, Joan has welcomed hundreds of performers into her non-traditional acting workshops.

The Brantford Cabaret is the brainchild of the wacky imagination of Joan Minnery, its founding director. The premise of the Brantford Cabaret has always been about our actors having a laid-back, silly theatrical experience. Theatre can be strict and very by-the-book. Joan wanted to create an atmosphere of play and merriment. Where anything goes, and the only rule is to have fun while still learnin

g about acting and being on stage. Our workshops often are fused with several storylines from multiple musicals and while there is a plot, there's never really a cohesive storyline -- just a whole lotta semi-recognisable story fragments and a good-humoured frivolity. Many of the cast write their lines or contribute to their moment on stage. We encourage originality and we often change things according to a funny line or something that has happened unexpectedly. We laugh a lot, and you will find yourself laughing throughout. We want to take THIS time to thank the FAMILIES. For getting their cast members to rehearsals every week, for supporting their journey into the land of Make-Believe and for helping the cast to commit to this large undertaking. It takes a village and we thank YOU for being part of ours. Our Mission Statement ... Brantford Cabaret — Community Music … We Strive To Put The Emphasis On FUN TEAM WORK... Every Person Is Important. Every Person Is A Star!!! Our classes are 90 minutes long. We will spend time on each of the 3 elements; Acting, Singing & Dance. Students will learn about drama, costuming, characterization, role-playing, facial expression, props, and stage projection — how to correctly use their singing voice for the stage, while also building skills in intonation, breathing, pitch, harmonization and tone. Students will learn how to move on stage, with emphasis on dancing as a group, with energy & commitment to the choreography. All of this will be done through teamwork while enjoying theatrical games and exercises. There will be a small production for family and friends at the end of the course, which will be chosen by the students and the teacher. We welcome students of various levels of experience, and all backgrounds and abilities. Our goal is to teach in a fun laid-back way that benefits each student as an individual and attain their own personal next-best level of achievement in the performing arts. We strive to put the emphasis on FUN TEAM WORK!!! Your instructor is Joan Minnery; an award-winning vocal and drama coach and a well-known entertainment persona in Brantford and Brant County. Joan teaches musical theatre privately at the Starr Sensations School of Vocal Music. Joan’s students have won over 300 Performing Arts awards.

“My idea is to teach as an orchestra leader -- Teach...Rehearse...Produce. I teach, we practice, then I stand back and THEY produce, as I go around to correct and offer feedback and guidance, as a group and individually. This is done within a hands-on environment with a then-and-there approach; which is very important for performing arts and chorus line work. Through practice, they will learn.”

In our Brantford Cabaret workshops you will Gain skills and confidence in Public Speaking & Communication Learn ... Flexibility & Teamwork Experience ... Friendship & Follow Through Outcomes. We accomplish this by working on the 4 main areas of Acting:

VOICE: pitch, pace, pause, projection, tone, and volume
BODY: posture, gesture, facial expressions, and eye contact
MOVEMENT: pace, weight, energy, direction, and pathways
SPACE: use of space, stage direction. The performance and audience area. Space involves the way the performance area is used to communicate meaning, define settings, represent status and create actor and audience relationships. Musical Theatre encompasses the triple threat; Acting, Singing & Dance; as all three culminate in the theatrical production on stage. Our aim is to allow students to learn the essential elements of the performing arts through the context of Musical Theatre. We believe that students who study musical theatre, are fortunate to have the feeling of self-worth that comes with perseverance and a job well done. We are committed to fostering the musical growth in each student and helping them reach their individual goals, enjoying the journey along the way and performing in a live group environment. Our students will learn to deliver their performances with far more power, passion and emotion that will enable them to connect with an audience. They will come away with the concept of learning to sing and dance at the same time while learning the art of interpretation and above all making friends & having FUN!!!

Dear Brantford Cabaret Cast:

Wow.

What an incredible show!

As we sit and reflect on our performance of Practically Perfect in Every Way, we are filled with pride, gratitude, and so much joy.

You did it.

Not only did you put on a wonderful show, but you performed for the largest audience we have ever had. We had a full house, a capacity crowd, and every single person in that audience got to see the amazing talent, hard work, and heart that each of you brought to the stage.

From the very first rehearsal to the final bow, you grew so much.

Some of you arrived nervous and unsure of yourselves. Some of you had never been on stage before. Some of you were quiet, shy, or worried about making mistakes.

But look at you now.

You sang.

You danced.

You acted.

You made people laugh.

You made people smile.

And most importantly, you believed in yourselves.

We would like to offer special congratulations to Amirah for her wonderful performance as Mary Poppins and Sawyer for bringing Bert to life with so much energy and charm.

A huge round of applause also goes to Delilah, who took on the very big role of Mr. Banks and did an outstanding job, and to our newest cast member, Jocelyn, for her beautiful portrayal of Mrs. Banks. Sidney's charming Bird Lady was the SEED that was planted for the evening!!!

To the Banks children, the Bird-Umbrella, the Chimney Sweeps, the Kite Flyers, Mr. Riley the Banker, and every single performer who stepped onto that stage—you mattered. Every role was important. Every scene was important. Every one of you helped create something magical.

One of the most wonderful parts of the evening was seeing so many people come to support you.

We saw parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, principals, friends, past cast members and so many important people from your lives sitting in the audience cheering you on.

To your families, thank you.

Thank you for driving to rehearsals, helping with costumes, practicing lines, encouraging your children, and supporting this adventure from beginning to end. We could not have done it without you.

Most of all, we want to thank YOU.

Thank you for your hard work.

Thank you for your kindness.

Thank you for your courage.

Thank you for your resilience.

Thank you for trusting us and trusting each other.

And before you put Mary Poppins away for the summer, we have one more request.

Keep singing Practically Perfect in Every Way.

That song belongs to you.

You helped create it.

You helped shape it.

You gave it life.

Not every cast gets to say they have their very own original song, but you do.

Who knows? Maybe one day we'll publish it so even more people can hear the song that this cast created together.

For now, keep singing it proudly.

Keep believing in yourselves.

Keep being creative.

Keep being brave.

And keep sharing your gifts with the world.

We are already looking forward to seeing many of you again in September when we begin our next adventure: The Greatest Show in Auradon — a magical mashup of The Greatest Showman and Descendants.

We'll talk more about that in the future, but for now, take a moment to celebrate what you accomplished.

You should be very proud.

Because we certainly are.

Thank you for making this show practically perfect in every way.

With love and gratitude,

Joan Minnery
Brad Kidder

☂️✨ A Spoonful of Magic Arrives Tomorrow! ✨☂️

Tomorrow, our young performers will take the stage and bring a little bit of Mary Poppins magic to Brantford — and I could not be more proud of them.

Over the past weeks, I have watched something extraordinary happen.

Children who arrived quietly have found their voices.

Children who were nervous to stand in front of a group are now singing, dancing, acting, improvising, and stepping confidently into the spotlight.

They've learned songs, mastered choreography, embraced English accents, developed characters, built friendships, and discovered talents they didn't even know they possessed.

As Mary Poppins herself would say, they've found that in every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. And these young performers have embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, imagination, and heart.

Tomorrow's performance is more than a show.

It's courage.

It's growth.

It's teamwork.

It's children discovering what they're capable of when they dare to say "yes" to something new.

I've seen shy caterpillars become butterflies.

I've seen children who once stood at the back of the room now command a stage with confidence and joy.

I've seen laughter, determination, resilience, creativity, and a whole lot of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious spirit.

To our amazing cast: you have worked hard, supported one another, and created something practically perfect in every way.

To the families who have cheered them on, driven them to rehearsals, helped them learn lines, and encouraged them every step of the way—thank you for helping make this magic possible.

And to our audience, prepare yourselves.

Tomorrow, you'll see far more than a children's theatre production.

You'll see young people discovering their wings.

You'll see confidence take flight.

You'll see imagination dancing across the stage.

And if you're lucky, you may just leave believing that anything is possible.

After all, that's what Mary Poppins has always taught us.

A spoonful of confidence, a dash of courage, a sprinkle of imagination, and suddenly the impossible becomes possible.

Break a leg, my wonderful cast.

Tomorrow, Brantford gets to see the magic I've been fortunate enough to witness all along. ☂️✨

🏆 Brantford Cabaret Wins Platinum — 4 Years in a Row

To our incredible Brantford Cabaret families, castmates, and community,
We are beyond thrilled to share that The Brantford Cabaret has once again taken home PLATINUM in Community Votes Brantford… making this FOUR YEARS IN A ROW since we were first nominated. 🏆✨

Four years. Four wins.
We are so honoured—and so grateful.

The Brantford Cabaret began back in 2004, and over the past 22 years, we’ve grown, moved, evolved, and found our way through many different homes. For the last four years, we’ve been so fortunate to share a space at the Grand River Community Health Centre—and something truly special has blossomed here.

What we’ve built together in just 90 minutes on a Thursday night each week is nothing short of magic.

To our castmates—our incredible children and teens—you are the heart of this program. Your courage, your joy, your creativity, your laughter… it fills the room every single week. Watching you grow, take the stage, support one another, and shine in your own unique ways is the greatest reward we could ever ask for. ❤️

To our families—thank you for your trust. Thank you for sharing your young people with us, for cheering them on, for believing in what this program stands for.

To our community—your votes, your encouragement, and your continued support tell us something powerful:
This matters. This is making a difference.

One of the most special things about The Brantford Cabaret is this:
✨ The program is completely FREE
✨ Our performances are completely FREE
✨ The only thing we ask for… is your presence

That kind of accessibility is rare. It’s meaningful. And it’s something we are deeply proud of.

A very special and heartfelt shoutout to Brad Kidder—the producer, the organizer, the backbone behind the scenes. Brad is the first face you see, the one handling intake, paperwork, logistics, and all the moving pieces that make this program run so smoothly.

Brad, this simply doesn’t happen without you.
We share this award with you wholeheartedly. 🙌

And truly—we share this award with all of you.
Every castmate. Every family. Every supporter.
This is your win.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of this journey—for 22 years strong, and especially for these past four incredible, unforgettable years.

We are so proud. And we’re just getting started. 💫

With gratitude,

Joan & Brad
