Are you still undecided about registering for the Crumbly Pineapple Quilt Along? The first clue goes out next Saturday (June 18th).
Be sure to read previous posts for more information or if you are ready to register pop us an email at [email protected] and we will get payment details sent to you (QAL Cost $25.00). This one is going to be lots of fun!!!!
So in the meantime - let’s talk scrappy! Scrappy thread and scrappy fabrics …. we all have them. The uglies, the leftovers, the hand-me-downs, they are hidden away in all of those out-of-sight corners in our sewing room. To make a scrappy version you need a lot of different prints in the dark and medium color range. So maybe collect a bunch of dark blues, blacks, dark brown, dark purple, etc. and stack those together; and then do the same with some medium colors like tan, grey, blue, etc. These could be some leftover “chunks” from fat quarters or stragglers left over from a charm pack or maybe you just want to cut out a square or two, or a strip from a bit of yardage that is the perfect print/color for this quilt. Either way these “scraps” need to be cut the sizes noted in the cutting directions for this version.
But wait! We also need to talk about crumbly scrappy. Crumbly scraps are the smallest of the bunch of scrappy bits. These are the scraps of many colors that are somewhere around the 1” to 1.25” size but likely not much wider than 2”. Some will be short strips left over from binding and other projects; some will be old unused triangles or even half square triangles; and some will be just plain odd shaped pieces maybe left over from a long ago appliqué project. These will be pieced together to make the size of blocks you will need for the crumbly version of the quilt.
Go grab them all and let’s get started!
For both the scrappy and the crumbly version, the first thing you need to do is to crank up the music, plug in the iron and start pressing these bits and pieces into a semblance of flatness. Being all stuffed and crinkled up in drawers, bags and dark corners has created a huge mess of wrinkles and loose threads. Detangle and cut those threads enough to make it easier to work with, but remember this is the time to free yourself of the obsessive urge to tidy - breathe - let it go! Don’t fuss with them - they will behave eventually.
Make a nice huge stack of darks and mediums and even a stack of neutrals/lights if you are wanting to use those as “scrappy” instead of the 1 yard of background light/neutral.
But, hold on - we are not done with the scrappiness yet! Go dig out all of those icky coloured, neons and grotesque hues of thread that you can’t even remember buying. Maybe these were handed down from Grannie FiFi all those years ago and you thought you would need them someday. Well, today is the day that you DO need them!!! While you are at it grab all those partly filled bobbins that are tangled up in the drawer and put everything into a big bowl or basket so they are easy to grab and use.
Let’s thin out some of this hoarded mess!!!!
Hope to see you next Saturday!
