Today we celebrate Prof Wangari Maathai's 11th Memorial. A remarkable hero who fought for human rights, democracy and environmental conservation through the planting of trees. She was the first African woman to
win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
We encourage everyone to plant a tree in remembrance of a truly remarkable hero.
GBM continues to advance the work Prof Wangari started.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) added the migrating monarch butterfly for the first time to its “red list” of threatened species and categorized it as “endangered” — two steps from extinct.

“To preserve the rich diversity of nature we need effective, fairly governed protected and conserved areas, alongside decisive action to tackle climate change and restore ecosystems.

In turn, conserving biodiversity supports communities by providing essential services such as food, water and sustainable jobs.”

The monarch butterfly fluttered a step closer to extinction Thursday, as scientists put the iconic orange-and-black insect on the endangered species list.
