"This is my second home"

Sincere CONGRATULATIONS to Caretaker James Bird on his retirement today! One of our longest-running team members, James has been a fixture of The Rose and is always seen around The Rose sporting city shirts and hats that span his decades-long career.

When James first started out with Security in 2004, his manager had James follow him outside to see the parking lot and construction site he was assigned to: his first job was to guard the fence around what would become The Rose. Now 22 years later, he's finally passing the torch of caring for the safety and security of our beautiful building.

"In organizations like ours, there are people whose work becomes woven into the daily rhythm of the building and the team. James is absolutely one of those people. His dedication, passion for the arts, knowledge of the facilities, and care for the community around him have had a real impact over the years. The work that keeps these buildings functioning safely and consistently is often work that happens quietly and behind the scenes, but it is incredibly important and deeply appreciated. On behalf of the entire team, thank you, James, for your years of service and contribution."
- Jocelyn Johnston, Theatres Manager

"Pride means different things to different people, but for me it’s about connection, acceptance, and having the freedom to be yourself without fear or apology. I’m really grateful we’re able to come together as staff today in that spirit of community and support."

Thanks to our Cultural Services team members who represented The Rose at the City of Brampton – Your Local Government Pride Flag Raising this morning. This month and always, we celebrate our co-workers, artists and patrons from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community with joy, respect and - of course - pride.

Can you spot the skateboard, soccer shin pads, dryer venting and fishing poles that make up full-size puppets?

It was impossible to see the construction of the full-size puppets during Lightwire Theater’s DINO LIGHT last month, but super cool to see them when the cast came out after the performance to show kids what they look like and are made of.

What’s in your garage that could use a creative upgrade?

The next generation of stage technicians from Mayfield's Lighting and Sound Production class got a quick backstage tour & tech talk with Steve and Mike after the Arts Adventures matinee of SISTER ACT presented by Brampton Music Theatre.

Typically our backstage tours don't usually get this level of detail about how to use the equipment such as our single-purchase fly system or the efficiency of colour-coding cables according to the resistor code system, but the students were an appreciative audience!

Turn up the volume if you want to learn more!
