For some out-of-the-blue reason it feels like the perfect time to talk about the OG name for a lake. 🤔 (Can't image why, but far be it for us to question.)

For Theresa Williams, considering her Indigenous ancestors gives her art practice a different dimension: 'revisiting the history of iconic scenes.' In some landscapes, that means reimagining them without the highways or power poles now present. In the case of this particular icon, it was considering how it has become less accessible along with its rising popularity and the expense required to visit.

And: its first and real name.

'Lake of the Little Fishes' is 72 x 48. Acrylic on canvas, $6250.

There are some jubilant souls dancing for joy in our back room - with the news that their show opens in a mere 6 days, then it's time to shine!

This is just a little tantalizing glimpse of the beautiful sculptural pieces created by versatile artist Lisa Schwartz for 'Emotional Terrain', opening on Saturday, September 5th and in the gallery until October 3rd.

The show will be featuring the works from Lisa and a collection by fellow fibre artist Deanne Underwood.

Opening reception from 1 - 4 pm; there will be a short artists' talk around 2 pm. See you soon!

In the background of this photo are the MANY large pieces delivered by Deanne Underwood on the menu for our next show, opening in just one week. In front: one of Deanne's new small works as a delicious amuse-bouche for you!

Deanne painstakingly renders feeling and dimension into the Alberta landscape using a medium you may not have seen before - fibre! Fluffed into clouds, braided into an iconic wheat field, felted into a full moon: hours and hours of a labour of love for her home province. The results are surprising, engaging and beautiful.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's teaser of Lisa Schwartz, the other feature artist in this show!

'Emotional Terrain' opens next Saturday, September 5th. Please join us for an artists' reception from 1 - 4 pm, with a short chat with Deanne and Lisa at 2 p.m.

Before Dark

From the porch at dusk I watched
a kingfisher wild in flight
he could only have made for joy.

He came down the river, splashing
against the water’s dimming face
like a skipped rock, passing

on down out of sight. And still
I could hear the splashes
farther and farther away

as it grew darker. He came back
the same way, dusky as his shadow,
sudden beyond the willows.

The splashes went on out of hearing.
It was dark then. Somewhere
the night had accommodated him

—at the place he was headed for
or where, led by his delight,
he came.

Wild aster, bee balm, hyssop, sweet crysanthemum
Proclaim bold purple in the pallid dawn,
Asserting there's more blossoming to come,
More purple in the prickling thistle thorn,
More purple in the valley's swirling haze;
Even the robin's shadow on the lawn,
Even your welcome of the dew, your praise,
Proclaim bold purple in the pallid dawn.
Yes, purple is the colour of your need
To have your mood made manifest, your final flair
Before October's culminating leaves exceed
In parting opulence the purple air
Of royalty that radiates above your head,
Your mastery of mourning everywhere
You move to make a purple hymn to hum:
Wild aster, bee balm, hyssop, sweet crysanthemum.
