Before the mass production of metal and plastic needles, historical knitters relied on carved animal bones, walrus tusks, wood, and even bird feathers (for lace work). Bone was especially popular because it naturally buffed to a slick, smooth finish with use—much like modern polished wood needles.

When it comes to winter-ready footwear, sometimes delicate fingering-weight yarn just won't cut it. One of our team members is currently working on the ultimate cozy sock using Novita 7 Brothers yarn on 4mm needles, and it’s shaping up to be an essential!

Knitting a sock with a worsted weight yarn on 4mm needles means the project flies off the needles much faster and is much easier on your hands and joints. Novita 7 Brothers is a Finnish blend of 75% wool for warmth and 25% polyamide for strength. That sturdy nylon reinforcement keeps high-wear areas like heels and toes from thinning out, giving you a pair of house socks that are a little more durable.

Did you know that crocheters often have speed advantage when learning to knit if they adopt the Continental knitting style? Most knitters in the English-speaking world learn the "English" style—holding the working yarn in their right hand and physically "throwing" it over the needle for every single stitch. But in Continental knitting (often called "picking"), you tension the yarn in your left hand and hook the tip of your right needle through the loop.

Because Continental knitting requires less arm and hand movement, it is often much faster and gentler on your wrists. And since crocheters already hold their working yarn in their left hand with a tensioned index finger, transitioning to Continental knitting feels almost second nature.

So, if you’re a crocheter looking to cross over into knitting, or an English-style knitter wanting to double your speed, switching hands might be worth trying!
