One of my students is drawing her sister. Another is creating a portrait of her best friend.

Every Friday, my Advanced Art Group (ages 14+) works on challenging projects, exploring portrait, colour theory, composition, and professional painting and drawing techniques.

It’s a space for young artists who want to take their artistic skills to the next level while developing their own unique style.

Same reference. Same technique. Completely different results. 🎨

This week, my young artists put their brushes aside and explored palette knife painting and impasto techniques!

Thick layers of paint, bold textures, unexpected colour combinations… and a little creative mess. 🤭

But my favourite part?

Every student started with the same landscape reference, yet every painting turned out completely different.

And THAT is exactly what I want to see in my art classes.

Not perfect copies. Not identical results.

Individuality. Confidence. Creative thinking.

Because art education isn’t about teaching children to paint exactly what they see. It’s about helping them discover how THEY see it. 🤍

What if an art class was more than just painting? 🍄🎨

With my youngest artists, we turned one little mushroom project into a whole adventure.

🍄 We painted a composition inspired by poisonous mushrooms
🔎 went on a mushroom hunt around the studio
✨ experimented with glow-in-the-dark sticks
🧪 mixed a little science into our art
🎨 and learned through play, movement and creativity.

I truly believe that especially for young children, art doesn’t have to mean sitting at a table for an hour.

They can paint. Move. Search. Experiment. Ask questions. Discover.

And somehow, all of it becomes ART. 🤍

Inspiration or copying? 👀

I saw a photograph and immediately wanted to paint it.

Not recreate it.
Not copy it.
See what would happen if I passed it through my eyes.

I met photographer Andrew Andrew Crome - Photographer at the Art Slam in Midland. While everyone was focused on the competition, he was behind the camera capturing all those little moments around us.

Later, I found his work… and one photograph stopped me.

Those houses. The rooftops. The mood.

It felt strangely close to the world I’ve been building in my Rooftops series.

So I did the simplest thing:

I asked.

“Can I use it as a reference for my new artwork?”

He said yes. 😉

And now his photograph is slowly becoming something completely different on my paper.

Sometimes the right people come into your life at exactly the right time. 🤍

My friend Tanya IK brought us together, and somehow our conversations very quickly turned into ideas, plans, and a feeling that we’re completely like-minded.

And now here we are — literally building something together. 😄

Apparently, Art Slam was a team competition… I just didn’t know it. 😂🎨

While I was busy feeling like a rock star, my husband was busy being my photographer, timekeeper, lifeguard, personal assistant, emotional support, and professional overthinker. 😂❤️

And somewhere between “YOU HAVE 30 SECONDS!” and wiping paint off my hands, I realized how lucky I am to have someone who takes my success even more seriously than I do.

Huge thank you to Quest Art School + Gallery Midland Cultural Centre for creating such an incredible night and to the entire Art Slam team, volunteers, sponsors, and our wonderful host Stephanie Rumball who kept the energy going all evening! 🩶

And a special thank you to the people behind the cameras — Andrew Crome - Photographer , who captured so many incredible moments of the night, and my friend Tanya IK (Artem Iermak), who caught some of my absolute favourite moments (and facial expressions 😂).

And finally, a very special thank you to Tammy Ferrando Gauthier and Pamela R. Higgins , who gave my paintings new homes.

These are the memories I’ll keep. 🩶
