Meet one of our two soloists: Lenny Ranallo

Drawing inspiration from Bach to Coltrane and beyond, American guitarist Leonard Ranallo blurs the boundaries between performer, composer, and improviser. Praised for his “sensational” performances (WXVU), Ranallo is equally at home on classical and electric guitar, bringing his unique voice to concert stages across North America and Europe. Recent highlights include appearances at the University of St. Andrews (UK), the Peabody Conservatory (US), the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (CA), and BBC Radio Scotland.

An avid chamber musician, Ranallo regularly performs with Quartet Malamatina, pianist Yolanda Tapia, and The Happenstancers, hailed as “Toronto’s Chamber Music Innovators” (Ludwig Van Toronto). At just 17, he made his orchestral debut as a concerto soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. A passionate advocate for new music, he collaborates with composers from the US, Canada, and the UK to expand the repertoire for both classical and electric guitar.

Ranallo is a dedicated educator, formerly on faculty at the Peabody Preparatory, Swarthmore College and the Interlochen Arts Academy. In 2024, he launched the Suzuki guitar program at the MNjcc Suzuki School and established the Ranallo Guitar Studio in Toronto.

One of Finland’s leading interpreters of contemporary guitar music, Teuvo has premiered more than twenty new works and is founder and Artistic Director of the KitaraNova Festival. His 2025 debut album, Nova, brought an entirely new programme of previously unrecorded works to international acclaim. He’s performed as a concerto soloist with the Tapiola Sinfonietta and the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra, and holds a Master of Music from the Sibelius Academy, including exchange studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Meet Teuvo Taimioja (Finland)

A guitarist devoted to new music, Teuvo has premiered close to 30 works for the instrument and is founder and artistic director of the KitaraNova festival. His debut album, Nova, features newly commissioned Finnish repertoire. His playing has taken him across Finland, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Scotland.

On August 29, he brings that spirit of discovery to Barrie, one half of a double bill of solo guitar.



Meet Lenny Ranallo (USA/Toronto)

Drawing on everything from Bach to Coltrane, Lenny blurs the line between performer, composer, and improviser, equally at home on classical and electric guitar. He made his orchestral debut as a concerto soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic at just 17, and regularly performs and teaches across North America and the UK.

On August 29, he joins Teuvo Taimioja for an afternoon of solo classical guitar here in Barrie.
