There are concert halls, and then there is Massey Hall—a room with memory in its walls. ✍️🎶
On May 23, 2024, that memory was alive in every lyric, harmony, and hush between notes as Canada gathered to honour one of its greatest songwriters at ‘Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot’, a sold-out tribute concert held at the venue that Gordon Lightfoot graced more than 170 times throughout his career—more than any other artist in the venue’s history. 📍
Lightfoot was the last artist to perform at Massey Hall before the venue closed for renovations in 2018—and the first to return when it reopened in 2021, further binding his legacy to the historic hall itself. ✨
Following Lightfoot’s passing on May 1, 2023, Massey Hall opened its doors to fans wishing to offer condolences and remember the legendary songwriter. The 2024 tribute concert, organized in collaboration with the Lightfoot Estate, was designed not only to honour him, but to let the music breathe again on that storied stage. 🎵
The evening was anchored by two house bands:
• Blue Rodeo
• The Lightfoot Band
From there, the lineup unfolded like a map of Canadian songwriting excellence, featuring Burton Cummings, Tom Cochrane, Allison Russell, Aysanabee, Serena Ryder, City and Colour’s Dallas Green, Kathleen Edwards, Sylvia Tyson, William Prince, The Good Brothers, and Meredith Moon—Lightfoot’s daughter. 🍁
In the end, the tribute was more than a concert—it was a national thank you. 🇨🇦🙏
A celebration not only of Gordon Lightfoot’s songwriting, but of the rare way his music continues to connect generations of Canadians to memory, place, and one another.
