I know every goat in my herd by name… but I’m still getting to know the mushrooms in our forest 🍄🐐

The forest is so beautiful at this time of year. Every walk seems to reveal something else I want to stop and look at—and the goats get plenty of practice waiting for me 😂

I’d love to connect with someone who knows their mushrooms and would enjoy sharing a little knowledge on a forest walk with the herd.

Yesterday’s cuddle session came with a part of life here that’s hard to witness.

Around 3:30 pm, a coyote cornered a chicken against the goat fence, caught it and carried it into the trees. Our guest, Christopher and I were right there.

These are the moments afterward—the goats watching the forest and Christopher looking back at me, trying to make sense of what we’d just seen. 💔

I was surprised it happened in broad daylight with people nearby. But coyotes can be active during the day, too. Afternoon doesn’t mean our animals are safe from predators, and our presence alone isn’t a reliable barrier.

Secure enclosures for poultry, close supervision of small pets and keeping food scraps and pet food out of reach all help reduce the risk.

We share this place with wildlife. There’s so much beauty in that, but some moments are really hard. Sharing this as a reminder for anyone else caring for animals beside the forest. 🤍

Goats eat everything???? Do they???

Roses? Delicious. 🌹
Whole bananas? Don’t mind if we do. 🍌
Banana peels and apple chips? Gone.

But the hay they pulled out, dropped, and walked all over?

Apparently that’s beneath their very refined standards. 🙄🐐

The buffet is generous. The reviews are harsh.
Hay waste with goats is REAL. 😂

Because sometimes, life gets a little too loud.

Two weekends of making beautiful forest brooms… 🧹✨

Handmade, foraged and looking exactly how we wanted them.

The goats, however, apparently saw something completely different. 😂🐐

Because when you build a broom out of delicious branches and leave it anywhere near goats… you may have accidentally created a buffet.

No suspects at this time. 👀
