40/50 - Amy Sedgwick, "Study in Dandelion #1-3", 2025. Dandelion stems

Artist BIO:
Amy Sedgwick is an Antigonish-based textile artist, Occupational Therapist, and student of Miksang contemplative photography whose practice spans nearly thirty years. She has exhibited at the People's Place Library. She studies traditional basketmaking with local basketmaker Sîan Turner. Her recent exploration of ecospirituality has drawn her toward wild textiles — harvesting plants from the land to deepen her relationship with place and the animating spirit present in all things.

Artist STATEMENT:
"My work begins with wandering — gathering seaweed along the shore, harvesting dandelion, rush, and cattail. These materials arrive by chance: found, noticed, picked up. In my hands, they are woven together, converging with each other and with me. The result is something neither fully wild nor fully made — structured by human intention yet alive with the character of the land and sea. I am drawn to the place where the humanmade and the non-human meet, and to the way weaving itself enacts that meeting: strand by strand, material by maker, wildness by form."

38/50 - William Rogers, "Low Tide at Wellington Bridge", 2025. Watercolour

Artist BIO:
William Rogers is an Antigonish artist working in many media. He works mainly from life with figures and plein air landscapes and has exhibited and won awards with many international societies including AWS, CSPWC, TWSA, OPA, NOAPS, of which he is also a signature member.
He has work in many private and public collections including the Nova Scotia Art Bank. His most notable inclusion is in the Royal Collection of HM King Charles III.

Artist STATEMENT:
"The watercolor of 'Low Tide at Wellington Bridge' in Ireland was painted en plein air. It resulted from an accidental spill of strong colour in the painted process, which I tried to repair, but decided to keep going and liked the result. The subject of mud as beautiful was also a consideration.”

Artist BIO:
Emily Raftus-Quilty is a Mi’kmaq artist who explores the concept of interconnectedness through art. Raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Emily felt a disconnect with her Indigenous heritage and family in Flat Bay, Newfoundland. Through reconnecting with her culture and family while expanding artistic skills/knowledge, Emily built comfort in her identity and style. Her art emphasizes the relationship between oneself and the natural world. Emily’s artistic message is that colonial ideologies and ways of life disconnect us from the natural world and the life that runs through everything.

Artist STATEMENT:
"‘Sqadichk’ is a piece that explores the convergence of life in its many forms. The movement of the land, water, and sky as they converge, mix, and intertwine to create the landscape of Sqadichk (Sugarloaf) mountain in Listiguj, New Brunswick. Stories say Sqadichk was a volcano, now dormant, it tells the tale of past elements converging to shape the current landscape."

36/50 - Benoît Paradis, "New Orleans Pink," 2025. Acrylic

Artist BIO:
Born in Montreal, Benoît spent his early years drawing characters, caricatures, and sports cars. As a young adult, he studied mechanical drafting, building a career of over thirty years in aeronautical design. His artistic side thrived in the evenings and on weekends, leading him to study Visual Arts at Cégep du Vieux-Montréal and Animation Cinema at Concordia University. He went on to participate in many exhibitions, symposiums, and sketching sessions. In 2020, he retired and devoted himself fully to art.

Artist STATEMENT:
"I create beauty inspired by the world around me. My travels, my readings, and an entire generation of colorist and naturalist painters inspire me and guide my work between urban heritage and the grandeur of nature. I strive to illustrate the vibrations that bring everything to life, particularly light and color. Painting what is visible to the eye and what only our soul can perceive. I seek the right balance between precision and imagination in my drawings and compositions."

📆In 2004, the StFX Art Gallery presented “The Art of Graphic Design” by Brian Segal and Ruth Young, on view from April 27 to May 28. The exhibit explored how images, text, and layouts influence what we see, feel, and understand about daily life. It highlighted the balance of creativity, function, and cultural awareness that goes into design work.

👨‍🎨 👩‍🎨 Brian Segal (1948 - 2011) had over 40 years of experience in design and illustration, while Ruth Young is a NSCAD-graduate designer who currently works at StFX as an instructor in the Art Department. They worked alongside each other with this exhibit that recognizes the importance of cultural and educational visual projects.

🎉 The StFX Art Gallery is celebrating its 50th anniversary year (2026-27) in two ways, first by celebrating its present and future with the "StFX Art Gallery 50/50" juried exhibition, on now till Sept. 19, 2026, and, second, by showcasing its past through a series of posts such as this one looking back at past exhibitions of note.

35/50 - Jaye Ouellette, "Reflect," 2026. Acrylic on panel

Artist BIO:
Jaye Ouellette is a professional self-taught artist with nearly 40 years of experience. In 2025, her work was recognized as a finalist in the ARC Art Prize. She was featured in a four-page profile in International Artist magazine (2023) and was selected for the Pouch Cove Foundation Artist Residency (2022). Her work was included in "Terroir: A Nova Scotia Survey" at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (2017) and in "Capture: Nova Scotia Realism" (2015). Ouellette has exhibited extensively through galleries in Canada, the United States, and France, and has received numerous awards and honours for her work.

Artist STATEMENT:
“My usual work is large scale ocean paintings. However, none of these paintings fit the brief for this exhibition. I have been working on a series of small seascapes in which I continue to explore light and colour. These new paintings capture the moment when the terrestrial and celestial meet and converge into liquid reflections. Asking the viewer to find stillness within nature's constant state of flux. The setting sun is the axis of change from day to night, the moment the sky dissolves into the water."

Artist BIO:
“I am a multidisciplinary art whose work includes painting, illustration, sculpture, installation, satire, and the written word. I have exhibited across Canada for over 40 years in private, parallel, and public galleries. I have taught art for over thirty years, the last twenty at StFX. My work can be found in the collections of the Canada Council, Province of Nova Scotia, City of Ottawa, and the Museum of Industry, Stellarton, NS.”

Artist STATEMENT:
“Earlier work that dealt with atmospheric pollution -- The Air We Breathe, 2016; nuclear explosions - 957 Views of Nevada; children at war - Lala and Elias (2020) -- leads me to the … painting[ ] that I have offered for this show."

33/50 - Ruth Murray, "Eye of God," 2026. Stained glass

Artist BIO:
A passionate stained glass artist for 30 years, Ruth Murray of Antigonish is inspired by the colors and textures of glass. She utilizes the Tiffany method of foil and solder, although she has experimented with fused glass, lead came, and mosaics. Murray’s training began in Pictou County, with two builders of church windows. While earning her BA at StFX, she took stained glass courses in the Art Department. Murray’s work was exhibited at the StFX Art Gallery in 2018, the People’s Place Library, and several other venues. To preserve this artform, Murray teaches adult classes at Antigonish High School.

Artist STATEMENT:
“Inspired by NASA photos of ‘Helix Nebula,’ a dying star, this piece is a conceptual convergence of art and science, and its linear design focuses the eye on the center of the action. Recycled and offcuts of glass from other projects were chosen to imitate the star’s explosion into vivid color, with the gases and dust circulating and swirling through the surrounding space. The tiny stars in clear, iridescent glass sparkle in natural light, while the grey and rose colors reflect it. The opaque, iridescent blue, in sharp contrast to the paler transparent glass, grounds the focal point.”
