Bye Fernie and on we go👣 Yesterday I had a really nice rest day in Fernie. I was able to rest my right foot, which has unfortunately developed a painful spot in my new shoes over the past few days (thank you Sanne De Groot for your great help), sent off my fully written diary, bought food for the coming days, visited the museum and am very grateful to have met Nic, Sylvia and Ellie (🐶). They were not only my wonderful hosts, but also really interesting people to talk and listen to ☺️With fresh energy and some special trail snack, I continued along various forest roads and trails, while the wind blew warm waves of air out of the forest towards me.

Yesterday I walked to the town of Banff 👣⛰️Banff National Park and the town of Banff are of course very famous and extremely touristy. The main season has just ended, but the infrastructure for the millions of people remains visible and it is of course interesting to experience. The idyllic architecture is mainly home to (pretty expensive) hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops and clothing shops with outdoorsy looking products. For the first time in Canada since I passed through the old part of Quebec City a year ago, the amount of people walking or cycling comes close to how I know it for example from Europe.

One of the main reasons why I chose the route via Banff was to visit the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity . This is where various artists, musicians, writers and mathematicians from all over the world come together in residencies, for example; there is a library, restaurant, concert hall, workshops for various materials, studios ... it’s also the off-season there and I had the great opportunity to get a tour of this inspiring place.
A place and organisation that has been growing since 1933 and even if there may not be much to „see“ in the classic sense at the moment, it is places like this that are the starting point and meeting place for art and free, creative thinking and work, which are immeasurably important for us as human beings, living together as a society on one planet.
Tomorrow I will physically continue walking around the world again…👣

Day 1347 of the Round:Motion TOUR 💫 Yesterday I have reached the Canadian Rockies on my walk around the world 👣Having been able to see them in the blue haze in the distance for a few days now, I finally find myself among the mountains. So far l’ve had the best autumn weather you could wish for hiking with warm sunshine during the day and light frost with crystal clear nights. I’ve really enjoyed the last few months through the endless open prairie and (contrary to many people’s assumptions) haven’t found it boring at all 😊Now I’m still excited to be here - not just because of the mountains, but because it also means that I’m getting closer to the sea and the next, as yet very uncertain stage.
Unfortunately, it is still not realistic for me to walk longer distances through Russia at the moment, so l will adapt my route to the options available to me 🌊Fortunately, I’m allowed to stay in Canada until next summer, so my plan is for now: I’ll keep hiking towards Vancouver and piece together a nice, but not too technical route so I can hopefully get over the higher passes before the first real snowfall. And then l’ll see how it goes from there...

Full days in Calgary 😊 After having arrived to my wonderful hosts Royce and Marilyn I had quite a ToDo list to work on. Reaching out to more people to search for sailing possibilities across the Pacific, planning my route through the mountains through a bit of Banff National Park and other parks, where wild camping is clearly not allowed and I need to reach a campground every day, organising some gear…. Days pass by quickly like this🙃And then I got lucky to see a bit of Calgary and visit places like the beautiful library and the National Music Centre, where Royce and Marilyn were able to see a part of the city they haven’t seen before. Then: Farmers Market, eating good and fresh food, trying the famous Ginger Beef, which was invented in Calgary, walking through downtown…and every day all of a sudden it was late night😅
Now it’s already time to walk further around the world towards late autumn, early winter, mountains and the west coast…👣🏔️⛰️ 🌊

Some days are so full of different encounters that the walking in between happens almost as if on the side. Walking becomes like a much-needed open space where all the stories and people are organised step by step and find their place. I arrived at the Cluny Hutterite Colony -probably the last Hutterite Colony on my way through Canada- and while I was greeted with incredible openness and countless questions I felt almost melancholic. Autumn work is on the agenda - tomato sauces are being made, onions are being prepared for the winter, I visit the children at school and am shown around the church and various buildings.
I walk on through the hilly landscape under a burning sun, spend the night on a cattle farm and hear different opinions on Alberta’s current situation and soon arrive in Siksika Nation Land - coincidentally on Siksika Day - and am soon invited for coffee, learn that I must not refuse food that I am given as a gift, walk on full and with new provisions, and soon meet the owner and staff of Boy Chief Trading Post , where I am fuelled with wonderful enthusiasm and support and even get a beautiful addition to my hat.
Now the sky is streaked with clouds like threads, in the morning my tent is covered in dew and in the distance I can see the silhouette of the mountains veiled in blue haze. Suddenly I find myself sitting in a hot tub enjoying a b**r, thinking about the hot springs ahead of me… But first: Calgary!

Long days and suddenly there are a few trees, green fields, bushes, irrigation systems and often farms and houses. I’ve left the rattlesnakes (I think) behind, the dry, hilly prairie, met wonderful people and been provided with food and wonder how I could express in words what it’s like to be on foot in this area. Since I came to Manitoba (over 1000 km ago) it has been relatively flat to very flat or rolling hills all the way through Saskatchewan to Alberta. Sometimes there were cows, prairie, sometimes canola, wheat and corn and also cows - the words stay the same and yet - landscape and atmosphere are not the same when you experience them.

Goodbye Saskatchewan 🥹 Hello Alberta 🤩 Already quite few steps ago, I walked from Saskatchewan to Alberta in a rainy, windy moment. I passed through the surreally beautiful valley of the South Saskatchewan River and have been walking across Alberta’s rolling grasslands ever since. As far as the eye can see - hills, sometimes blurring in the misty rain, sometimes dramatically illuminated by the low sun, in between a bit of cattle, many, endless fences... and when the sun shines: rattle snakes all along the way. Then I come through the small settlement of Buffalo, where basically everything seems to be abandoned, but surprisingly the small church is open (but the spider webs suggest rather little use) and without any announcement this morning a small post office/antique - souvenir shop suddenly opened. Pure luck, as my drinking water had become a little scarce on the route through this rather dry landscape.
It’s so exciting to experience how rolling hills of just a few days walking ago can slowly change into a completely different type of rolling hills with a very different atmosphere.

Day 1322 of the Round:Motion TOUR 💫👣 I had a walking conversation with the sand dunes until the wind recommended to continue and I followed its advice! It started with getting a tour by three, little local guides in Sceptre through the museum about the Sand Hills and history of the region 🤩Over 10000 years ago glaciers have created these sand hills. Instead of bisons there is now kettle, little cacti grow and wind is moving the dunes.
The sky is getting dark and soon later it starts to rain while the walking across juniper and through the grass somehow reminds me of the way of walking in Northern Norway. Back on the gravel roads, I’m clearly back in Saskatchewan 😉
