Tariff friendly: International, Provincial Bruce, jr was born into the Mamalilikulla band one of the Kwakwakwa'wakw bands of Alert Bay, B.C. Herman's carving career begun in 1980 under the guidance of master carvers such as: Beau Dick (Kwakwakwa'wakw) Wayne Alfred (Kwakwakwa'wakw) at the young age of 14.

Bruce mentions that Beau had instructed Herman to learn the tempering of knives and elbow adzes before he could learn the rich culture and art world of the Kwakwakwa'wakw Nation. Herman continues to carve full time and is happy to be back in Alert Bay after spending almost 20 years in Washington State. Bruce spent the latter years of his education sellf taught and learning more about other Native American Indian's or also known as First Nation's, too. Consequently, Herman mention's that his education has come from traveling and enjoying the hospitality of other cultures and ways. Herman's travel's have even given him the oppurtunity to go to Eastern Washington University (EWU 1995 to 2000) a dream that wouldn't have happen if it were not for traveling. Herman is happy to share his artwork with the world and continues to carve and paint.

kwakwaka'wakw art's: herman, Jr next small yellow cedar peice. just touch up left to do. 220 cm length by 120 cm width by 25 cm thickness . acrylic paint. twine as a hanger. artist comment : " this piece was fun to carve. the yellow cedar grain being tight to wide grain. the grain showing light to dark colour."

today i started small loon project. change it up by doing something smaller, herman, jr will keep you posted on a picture of the loon.

kwakwaka'wakw: Killerwhale (orca) with Thunderbird Fluke. red cedar. clear minwax finish. The Thunderbird represents High Social Status. Known to be willing to help. The Killerwhale is adventerous and determined. sanded to a fine 320 grit sand paper.
Kwakwaka'wakw Artist : Herman ,Jr enjoyed carving this design. The red cedar was fine and made it fun to see the wood grain. This was a piece to finish up the month of July 2026.

the red cedar totem pole is emerging now. thunderbird capturing the killer whale and bear on the bottom. ready to get the wings happening too. yahoo! the new paint will make the project evenmore funbecause of the new type of paint.

Artist comment: " The Kolus is the younger brother of the Thunderbird. The high status in the Bighouse Ways( northwest coast potlatch) ; Kolus in known as a helper. The killer whale is adventurous and loyal." This carving is entirely hand made and finished. Gilaka'sla!
