The U'mista Cultural Society was incorporated under the British Columbia Societies Act on March 22, 1974. Since that time, it has worked towards fulfilling the mandate to ensure the survival of all aspects of cultural heritage of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw. To facilitate the accomplishment of this mandate, th

e Board of Directors, composed of any person who is an individual, family of honorary member and can trace ancestry to a member of any tribe of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw, is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring all policy. The Executive Director, hired by the Board of Directors, is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that achieve the ends and aims that the Board has identified. This comprises day to day operations, management of the Centre, and yearly budget development. The staff of the society consists of one full time and three part time positions, including the Executive Director, with contract staff being hired for specific tasks. The full time staff ensures that all programming is achieved and the facility is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (please contact us for extended summer hours; Victoria Day to Labour Day). One of the objectives of the Society was the development of a facility to carry out the aims of the society. The present facility was opened in November of 1980. The focus of the permanent collection is the "Potlatch Collection". The other permanent exhibits on display include description of the traditional ethnobiology of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw and origin stories of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw villages, as well as, historical and contemporary Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw objects. Traveling exhibits of significance to the community are also displayed. The Meaning of U'mista:
In earlier days, people were sometimes taken captive by raiding parties. When they returned to their homes, either through payment of ransom or by a raid, they were said to have u'mista. The return of our treasures from distant museums is a form of u'mista.

T̓ŁAḴWA-3
Copper

𝘗𝘈𝘙𝘛 𝘖𝘍 𝘛𝘏𝘌 𝘜’𝘔𝘐𝘚𝘛𝘈 𝘗𝘖𝘛𝘓𝘈𝘛𝘊𝘏 𝘊𝘖𝘓𝘓𝘌𝘊𝘛𝘐𝘖𝘕

T̓łaḵwa Copper named A̱ngwala - Cloudy - which belonged to Ḵ̓wa̱mx’udi Charlie Walkus who was half A̱wik̓inux̱w from Rivers Inlet and ‘Na̱mg̱is from Alert Bay. Around 1864-65 a man from Fort Rupert named Hamidagame’ bought the copper in Victoria from a Northern Native for 50 blankets. By the time Ḵ̓wa̱mx’udi purchased the copper it was valued at 245 blankets and it was in his possession when it was confiscated in Alert Bay in 1922. The copper is made from numerous pieces of copper sheeting riveted together. In some places, such as the vertical line of the “T” or backbone, two layers of metal are riveted together which is unusual. The copper’s face, compared to the others in the collection, is flat and not domed. Although the “T” is also shallow, it is well defined. Uneven or low areas of the metal have been filled with a thick black paint. The copper is painted with several layers of black and grey paint. A crest design and the T-shape have been painted over with a grey paint or what could be a low quality graphite or silver paint that may have been used to imitate graphite. The face design has five ovoids etched into it with two “U” shapes extending over the top two ovoids. Below the two bottom ovoids is a facing downward “U” shape with a split “U” fine-lined inside. The design does not seem to be any distinct form line, nor does it create any distinct design, but possibly it is etched and painted to give it some decorative value. Parts of the upper and lower sections have been cut off indicating that it was a copper of some value worth “breaking”. There are many holes that are remnants of riveting to add pieces where parts of the original copper were chiseled away and then put back together. A̱ngwala must have had additional history that went further than what George Hunt had documented. Black, grey, copper.
