Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) experienced a brutal colonization by the British, and while it never had the exact legislative framework of South Africa, it was governed by a parallel system of white-minority rule, racial segregation, and land dispossession that mirrored apartheid.ColonizationIn the late 19th century, the region was colonized by the British South Africa Company, led by Cecil Rhodes, after whom the territory was named Rhodesia. The indigenous Shona and Ndebele people suffered massive land dispossession, with about 80% of arable land expropriated for white settlers.System of Segregation (Apartheid-style rule)When Southern Rhodesia gained self-governing status from Britain in 1923, and especially after the white-minority government unilaterally declared independence in 1965, a rigorous system of racial segregation was implemented. This system strongly mirrored apartheid in South Africa. Black citizens were stripped of political rights, restricted in where they could live and work, and required to carry passes.IndependenceThis intense period of subjugation led to the Second Chimurenga (a guerrilla war for liberation), ultimately forcing the white-minority government to the negotiating table. The country gained internationally recognized independence as Zimbabwe in 1980, ushering in black-majority rule.
