Doe a deer, a female deer 🎶

3 stories about the Arctic North, from the point of view of The North Star, and my favourite part was definitely about deer playing in the snow🦌 🌙

Lately I’ve been re-reading Braiding Sweetgrass and it’s become more important to me to bring nature back to my work. But I never see anything about the land I was born on, and the time I was born in—winter!! I currently live in an area surrounded by beautiful ancient trees and lots of forest animals. The last couple years I (like a crazy person, yes) have made friends with a Great Blue Heron who has really made me reconsider many things about the land I’m on.

As a classical dancer the first thing we do is learn “namaskar”—thank you Mother Earth for without you there would be no dance, no audience, and nothing to keep me stable. She’s magnificent, the most intelligent and beautiful. She’s a spectrum of Amazon rainforest and icebergs… kinda like us!! Like a diaspora. So why not honour her winters just as much as her summers?

I could go on and on about our non-human kin but that’s for another time!

More to come later!
In the meantime THANK YOU TRINIDAD and for giving me the space to bring the cooling forces of the north down to you! Now let me enjoy your sun and waters ❤️

An old video that is getting a little bit of resurgence on tiktok! Decided to share it here.

As this company has stepped away from classes, and more into archiving and production, it’s important to note that this has always been a company that teaches Odissi-based theory, but first and foremost, GDC owes its existence to Indo-Guyanese dance forms, theories and history.

Abhinaya is important to many styles of dance, and in Odissi, abhinaya is its own category of dance. However its uses are universal. Finding balance through integrity, knowledge and authenticity is what makes abhinaya powerful. Truly, one can sit and perform an entire abhinaya with just the face.

Describing it can simplify its importance but the training aspect does require… well… training! A teacher/guru, a mirror, and a healthy mental space are all integral to its mastery.

Where have we been?
While we no longer teach lessons, the work has not stopped. GDC has shifted gears into film production, panels and international dance performances.
In the last year alone our films and dances have been featured in the UK, Guyana, Trinidad, USA, Taiwan, Iceland and even locally in Toronto PRIDE.
Have an event and need entertainment? Need help developing a media project?
GDC is at your service, wherever you are in the world.

On behalf of the family and staff of Geetika Dance Co. we regret to inform you that our co-founder, Geeta Leo, has sadly passed away this morning.
Throughout her life, she devoted her time and space to teach us not only about dance, but life lessons as well. We will always remember the advice, the sewing lessons, the endless laughter and the stories that brought us all joy and happiness. Thank you for raising us to become the best versions of ourselves and for never letting us leave dance class without a smile on our faces. We love you forever and more. A little song will always play in our hearts for you. Rest in peace❤
To respect the wishes of the family, please do not call the house at this time. We will post a zoom link and updates soon. Thank you.

Hello parents and students!
We will remain closed for the month of September to allow students to normalize to their new schedules. We are also searching for a new space.
If all goes well, we hope to open in mid-October.
This will include starting zoom lessons online. However we are aware that zoom lessons do not work for every student and are committed to finding a safe space to hold physically distanced classes.

In the meantime we will be able to offer private Bollywood zoom lessons with daytime availability. Please send us a message to see what options work for you!

In the meantime—follow us on Instagram! where we will post performance and lecture videos. Send us your pictures so we can share them!!
