No risk, no reward…is what they say.

After a few weeks of deliberation, I purchased a beautiful collection of mainly 1960s and 1970s car dealership production models. A few manufacturers took on recreating these vintage automobiles in 1:25 scale to collect when you bought a new car. These are not models. I have seen a couple here and there over the years but these are truly special. A rare keepsake to go with your classic or a deep dive into an instant collection. Not sure yet if the will be divided or sell in one lot to one lucky buyer.

Well loved.

Passing through Red Deer Alberta last weekend, we stopped at a small downtown antique shoppe I was following online but had never been to physically.

After poring over the store, I spied this tiny knife hiding among a cabinet of vintage lighters and baubles. In horrible condition, it was difficult to open, having been smashed or crushed somewhere in its life. The metal tarnished, the pearl chipped and cracked on the handle and the blade duller than a teaspoon, this little pocket knife had seen some s**t. But just an inch from where a key ring once hung…the art.

A bright, colourful graphic of a Mountie, as much a symbol of Canada as a maple leaf or a beaver, riding proudly under a sky darkened by the residue of an ages old price tag. It was my treasure for the day. To commemorate, well nothing. Nothing but the trip in the rain that Saturday and the fact that I saw it and liked it.

I had no connection to it. Zero nostalgia. But someone had. Someone had kept that knife in their front jeans pocket, skulking through the woods with their friends, on camping trips, in a tackle box for cutting line and worms then in a cigar box under the bed in later years alongside old razors, love letters and maybe a medal or two from a time overseas.
It’s the kind of piece that makes me imagine it’s life before the antique store and captivating enough to let me create in my mind many different histories or none at all.

Do I plan to restore it to original?
No
Damn
Way.

It troubles me to realize certain things are sitting on shelves collecting dust.

This super cool four foot Coke button from 1956 was just that.
I knew my brother-in -law was sitting on this gem for decades. I convinced him to post it up and in a flash it sold to a collector up north.
Getting beauties like this out of the dark and back into the spotlight. It’s what we do. 👊

There’s finding a home for our picks, and then there’s SENDING THEM HOME. The latter is so gratifying.
