‘Petals In Relief’

20”x20” mixed media collage on gallery depth canvas.

I spent a lot of time layering hand-painted and textured paper to get that specific movement and delicate texture in the poppy petals. It feels so good to see it all come together on the canvas.

Little snippet of my work in progress! Mixed media collage 😊

‘After The Storm’ 20”x20” mixed media on canvas.

The last piece in my Vast series is now complete. This piece was a study of the tension and high contrast created by winter storms across golden stubble fields and grasses. I’m hoping to have captured movement with lines, marks and texture to have successfully created the visual break between the deep blue storm sky and the golden glow of the leftover crop below.

This was definitely a challenge as I don’t typically work with such huge swings in contrast, but now I want to do more 😊

Thank you Lee McClean for the beautiful reference image 😊

Path Of The Storm - my interpretation of a weird little phenomena that happens here in Alberta in early fall and late spring - you’ll get nearly every season in one day and what’s interesting is the sky will hang dark and very low and the snow will drop and be melted and gone within an hour - snow, sleet, wind, sun and warmth all in a matter of an hour.
I tried to capture the contrast in cold, warmth, and the energy that these scenes create with deep Prussian blue tones, warm golds, and heavy texture.

This is part of my Vast series - capturing Alberta’s prairies and skies.

Tonight’s quick sketch - a gaggle of geese. A lot of my sketch work become ideas/studies for future work. I often look back through my sketchbooks to revisit ideas and compositions I’ve created during these sessions, which are typically 30 minutes long.

Just sketch 😊

Tonights quick sketch - a whippet. I’ve always loved the streamlined and elegant shape of these dogs and thought it would be a good muse for tonight’s sketch.
