The story of Castle Fun Park goes all the way back to a backyard in Kelowna in 1979 when a young father with a background in construction literally started building castles on his lawn. Hank Wiebe was eager to become his own boss, so he and his wife Doreen took a big gamble and decided to try their hands at building an amusement park. Going in with several friends and business partners, they were able to get Scandia in Kelowna up and running in 1981.
After several years in Kelowna, the couple decided to sell their share in Scandia and take another gamble, buying a piece of land on what was then the outskirts of Abbotsford. Starting small – with just an outdoor golf and about 50 video games – they opened the doors of Wonderland in July of 1989. Shortly thereafter, the Jungle Golf was opened, and then, bit by bit, they dreamed up new attractions.
In 1998, the family received a fax from an amusement park in Ontario stating that they were infringing on the park’s naming rights. (While they had secured the rights to the name in BC, the other park had secured national rights to the name “Wonderland.”) The family was given 24 hours to change their business’ name. They were going to call it Castle Park, but their 7-year-old granddaughter insisted that the name did not adequately describe how FUN it was. Hence, the name Castle Fun Park was born.
Still owned and operated by the same family, Castle Fun Park has now been bringing fun to families in the Fraser Valley for more than 30 years!
