On Saturday, June 12th, we had our soft opening for the BLM Social Justice Art Project exhibition. This event was hosted and supported by many dedicated and committed individuals, institutions and local businesses. We will name them and share our gratitude in the upcoming posts. Today we wanted to share with you some behind the scene shots captured by the organizing crew. These images for us are a reminder of joy, dedication, teamwork and perseverance.

From the registration crew for making sure all guests feel welcomed, the wayfinding team for creating posters to ensure our guests get to the right place, the graphics team for designing covid-19 posters to remind us to stay safe and healthy, to the set-up and take-down crew for creating such a lovely and joyful environment (look at those gorgeous flowers), to the bakers behind these delicious cookies and the coffee not captured here, to the tech and music crew for making sure we have good tunes and no technical difficulties throughout the event, to our media crew for capturing the event so beautifully, to our on-site contacts for running around and making sure things are in place and so many other individuals who made the event happen - WE THANK YOU AND HONOUR YOU for all you have done.

We can’t wait to share with you more photos from the event and the works of the artists! Stay tuned family.

We’re so often told that art can’t really change anything. But it shapes our ethical landscapes; it opens us to the interior lives of others. It is a training ground for possibility. It makes plain inequalities, and it offers other ways of living. Where there is connection, there is strength.

We invite you to use our hashtag to share your thoughts, photos and reflections as you visit the BLM Social Justice Art Project.

BLM Social Justice Art Project is built on many strong values and intentions. One is “community”. We believe in building and nurturing a unified community that is bonded together through a beautiful struggle that is restorative, not depleting. We believe in a community that is rooted in love, integrity, justice and freedom for ourselves and for others. And most importantly, we believe in the coming together of a community that is united in its endeavors to dismantle internal, societal and institutionalized racism, to raise awareness and empower action.

What does community mean to you?

We are excited to announce the BLM Social Justice Art Project will be OPEN to public as of tomorrow, June 14th to September 15th!

As you prepare your visit to the gallery, we invite you to learn more about this project:

Introducing the Black Lives Matter Social Justice Art Project Exhibition. Over the past several months, 4 BIPOC artists from the Fraser Valley (Rain Neeposh, Faria Firoz, Dona Park, & Michelle Msami) worked independently, in collaboration, and with the guided support of 2 Project Mentors (Cultural Mentor, Vancouver Musician, Desiree Dawson + Artist Mentor, Associate Professor, Shelley Stefan) to create large-scale paintings on canvas which shed light on the lingering plague of systemic racism in our societies and institutions. We hope the artists’ creativity and passion will inspire our community to take an active role in combating white supremacy and racial injustice.

Please join us in solidarity and responsibility, as we launch the work of these artists and show support for the global movement. Visit our website to learn more about the event: https://www.abbotsfordblm.ca/

“State violence doesn’t discriminate between the strong or the weak. It doesn’t show empathy or mercy. It robs the most vulnerable of us of our agency.”

A two-spirit Cree artist, Rain was raised in Secwepemcúl’ecw as a Williams Lake First Nation’s member. He continues his family legacy of Indigenous artistry through his painting and beadwork, and brings his traditional knowledge to the exhibit in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

His painting We Keep Us Safe is featured in this project, which you can learn about here: www.abbotsfordblm.ca

“I know every Black person can identify their roots here. I know that they can feel a sense of belonging, when the world is fighting for them to feel alien.”

Michelle was born and raised in Botswana, Africa and graduated from Westwood International school in 2018, where she ventured into the conceptual art form she draws heavily from today. Her painting style is spontaneous in method and realistic in appearance; by offering her talent to the exhibit, she aims to embody the identity, history and culture of every member of the Black community.
