We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Rre Xgaiga Qhomatca. We had the honour of meeting and learning from the multi-talented elder during the 'Crafting Our Heritage' workshops that we held in D'Kar a few years ago.
We send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and communities whose lives - as ours - were touched by his.

Lerato Rakeresi is a talented man from Lephepe village, with an eye for creativity. It is this sharp eye that led him to notice the qualities of a type of limestone called 'lenyaphiri' in his village, which he carves into beautiful sculptural pieces that combine image and typography.

He makes customised pieces and would also love to share his talent with others - especially the youth.

The Visual Arts Department from the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture recently opened an exhibition at Nhabe Museum to showcase the Ngamiland entries and winners of the annual competition.
The star of the day was undoubtedly Charles Kakomee-Tjeja, a multi-talented Mbanderu creative known for using his creative talent to promote Herero culture as a whole.
This time however, he stole the show with his mixed media artworks, including a hand-held 'video camera' which complimented his traditional outfit.

The exhibition also showcased other talent, including the exquisite basketry skills of Ngamiland, excellent wood-carving by seasoned artists and an impressive string art portrait of Botswana's first President, Sir Seretse Khama.

The exhibition runs until Thur 17 May before winning entries are taken to the National Competition in Gaborone, so if you are in Maun don't miss out on the visual treats on display.

The process of turning ostrich eggshells into beads is a laborious one, which results in truly unique once-off traditional jewellery pieces that ought to be treasured.

Qhaqhoo Xare is one of the iconic artists at the Kuru Art centre in the small village of D'Kar. He says when he was younger he worked on a farm briefly, but quit to become an artist - a decision he does not regret, because he is now reaping the rewards as his work becomes more recognized. When he started, he says he was driven by his passion but is grateful that he is now able to earn a living doing what he loves.

Rre Qhaqhoo spends his days painting his unique creations on large canvases at the centre, and has also contributed his handiwork to the colourful murals on the A3 highway between Ghanzi and Kuke village.

Take a detour into D'Kar, the next time you are in the area, to marvel at (and purchase) an artwork or two.

We took a trip to Sehithwa to give copies of the 'Crafting Our Heritage' book to Mme Helen Kaepo Stephan's, who was profiled in the book as a doll maker who uses recycled materials to make Mbanderu and Herero dolls - a skill she learnt from her mother.

She wasn't home (but her sister was). We discovered that they come from a family of creative women who continue to make artefacts that keep the Mbanderu culture alive.

One of these artefacts is a small reddish container known as Onja Jo Ngombe (lenaka la kgomo) which directly translates to the 'the cow horn'. The small vessel - made from a cow horn' and covered in leather - was traditionally used to carry an ointment made from a type of whipped milk curd mixed with a red clay (letsoku). The ointment is applied to the skin following a bereavement in the family.

Nowadays people buy the container for storage or for decorative purposes.

The bark on the roots of the Mogonono and Motsentsela trees are used to dye the leather strips different shades of brown, and seeds of the Mogotlho (camel thorn) tree are incorporated as beads.
