S*X WORKERS RISE IN NUMBERS
Botswana is witnessing a troubling rise in the number of s*x workers, commonly referred to as prostitutes, a development closely linked to escalating unemployment levels across the country.
With limited job opportunities, many youths aged between 18 and 40, particularly women, are being pushed into selling their bodies as a means of survival. What is especially alarming is that this trend is no longer confined to urban centres such as Gaborone. It has steadily spread into rural areas, where economic hardship is often even more severe and support systems are limited. The growth of s*x work under these conditions poses serious social and public health concerns. Of greatest concern is the increased risk of HIV transmission, which threatens to reverse progress made in the fight against the epidemic.
This situation calls for urgent government intervention through job creation, skills development, social protection programmes, and strengthened public health responses to protect vulnerable citizens.
