SEDIRENG MOTHIBATSELA at the RELE GALLERY JOHANNESBURG ART FAIR 2022
ARTIST's STATEMENT
“MarthaFrancis”
Martha and Francis are the names of my grandmothers. Martha is my paternal grandmother who passed on before I was born, while Francis my maternal grandmother I experienced fully until she passed on in 1998.
This collection is a tribute to both these incredible women whom I have experienced in very different ways. I met my paternal grandmother when we exhumed her from her original resting place to where she lies now, next to my grandfather. The experience of exhuming my grandmother was deeply spiritual. The day was windy and slightly cold, and brightened up as the day progressed. The cloud cover made way for the sun almost insync with Martha’s emergence. It felt like she had been waiting for us as we unearthed the smile I had come to be familiar with in photographs, with one side tooth missing.
The candle flame has become a medium that can both communicate destruction as well as delicate fleeting beauty. I discovered this way of creating energy after my maternal grandmother, Francis passed away.
I had questions about where she and all who pass away go. What is heaven? What is the soul?
Francis embodied such elegant poise. A woman of contradiction. A Eurocentric sophistication rooted in down to earth South African standards. My grandmother kept a prestine home; polished parquet floors and tightly tucked in beds, lace draped brocade upholstered couches and stainglass doors. But it is the scent of Vicks and Rumneys s***f over dumplings and lamb in the kitchen that trigger memories of her comforting presence.
The candle flame continues to evoke a transcedental range of emotions in my work; sadness, lightness and freedom, as well as a confident presence. A medium which breaths and forces us to connect purely through our emotional filters.
