26 visitors kick start 2026 sessions at Bodhitse

Bodhitse welcomed the first academic of 2026 composed of 26 international students led by Dr Kuenga Wangmo from School for Field Studies, Bhutan, on 9 February.

Bodhitse's permanent resident Gamkar gleefully welcomed the group with a vigorous tail wagging and a hand-licking treat for some special guests.

The session saw a lively discussion of changes in Bhutan followed by a simple dinner.

On January 2, while much of the world has already welcomed the new year, Bhutan observes Nyilo, meaning “good year.” This festival is a solemn occasion of renewal and hope.

Nyilo marks the turning of the seasons, the moment when the sun begins to linger longer in the sky, heralding the approach of spring. It is a day dedicated to leaving behind past wrongdoings, when virtuous deeds are believed to carry greater merit, and when families and communities come together to honor tradition.

At its heart, Nyilo reminds us that the measure of a good year lies not in wealth, but in kindness, unity, and the courage to begin anew.

Although Bodhitse has not been as active as usual due to the road condition, it ran regular sound therapy sessions by Fran Bak and saw a number of international visitors to study, meditate, and meet our founder this autumn. Groups included School for Field Studies, the US team to train monastic leaders on and innovation, and the cross-party Scottish Parliamentarian group.

On 23 June, Bodhitse received Sonam Wangchuk, the innovator, educator, and activist star of Ladakh, and Gitanjali J Angmo of Himalayan Institute of Alternative Learning at Bhutan Dialogues at Royal Institute of Management. While Gitajanli did her Gita session from Bodhitse's terrace, Sonam Wangchuk explored the library - to find out much to their surprise the same landscaping, eco-friendly, communitarian, and spiritual values informing the construction of Bodhitse. The visit was followed by a gathering at Ludrong Hotel with Chimi and Seldon.

On this sacred day of Parinirvana, we remember not merely the passing of a historical figure, but the serene departure of one who had awakened fully to the nature of existence. The Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, entered Mahaparinirvana, the final release from the cycles of birth and death, under the Sal trees of Kushinagar, surrounded by his disciples, at peace in both body and mind.

In commemorating this occasion, Buddhists around the world do not gather in mourning. Rather, we observe in quiet contemplation the profound truth that the Buddha demonstrated through his death: that all conditioned things are impermanent, and in this impermanence lies the possibility of liberation.

The Buddha's life was an embodiment of compassion and insight. Even his passing served as a teaching, a reminder of the universal law of impermanence and of the necessity to seek freedom from suffering. While his physical presence ceased, the Dharma - his teachings - endure as a living guide for those who seek the path of awakening.

Parinirvana Day invites us not only to honour the Enlightened One but also to deepen our own practice. It is a moment to walk the Middle Way with awareness, to reflect on the Four Noble Truths, and to cultivate compassion as a way of being.

In remembering the Buddha’s final moments, may we be inspired to live meaningfully, with clarity and kindness, and to strive towards the inner peace that he so gently and powerfully revealed.
