“A hundred and five years after the discovery of insulin, millions of people still lack access to the diabetes care they need,” said Dr Catharina Boehme, Officer-in-Charge, WHO South-East Asia Region, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen access, affordability and people-centred diabetes care. 🌍

In WHO South-East Asia Region, 1 in 5 adults lives with diabetes, yet fewer than 1 in 3 receive treatment. Through , countries across the Region are integrating diabetes and cardiovascular care into primary health care systems at scale, with more than 43.5 million people already enrolled across 180,000+ health facilities. 🏥

Dr Boehme also highlighted country-led innovations — from Bangladesh’s community engagement initiatives, to Thailand’s diabetes remission guidelines, and Timor-Leste’s redesigned service delivery models — demonstrating that progress is possible through political commitment, strong partnerships and country action. 🤝✨

WHO continues to work with Member States and partners to expand access to affordable insulin and diagnostics, strengthen health-worker capacity, and accelerate equitable diabetes care for all.

Dr Boehme was speaking at the side event, “From Vision to Action: Five Years of the WHO Global Diabetes Compact”, hosted by The Helmsley Charitable Trust, Resolve to Save Lives and the World Diabetes Foundation.
