Manjushri is the Mahayana Buddhist bodhisattva (Buddha-to-be) of supreme wisdom, whose name means "gentle glory". He is depicted with a flaming sword of wisdom in his right hand, which cuts through ignorance, and a lotus flower with a Prajñāpāramitā (perfection of wisdom) scripture in his left. Often shown seated on a lion or lotus, Manjushri is revered for bestowing memory and intelligence, and for his role in asking questions of the Buddha to explain emptiness.
