Just months ago, on 21 February 2026, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck announced the vision for Project 108 at the Gelephu Mindfulness City.

Today, that vision is already bringing together hearts and hands from across Bhutan and around the world.

More than 20,000 volunteers have registered. More than 70 Jangchub Chortens have already been taken up through individual and collective offerings.

Civil servants and business leaders. Armed forces personnel and foresters. Monastics and lay practitioners. Bhutanese families, and friends of Bhutan from every corner of the world.

What makes this journey remarkable is not only the generosity being offered, but the spirit behind it. People from different countries, cultures and walks of life are coming together in support of a shared aspiration to create something that will benefit generations to come.

Contributions are arriving in many forms, through offerings, resources, prayers and acts of kindness both large and small. Each gesture carries its own story. Each offering reflects a belief that compassion, wisdom and collective goodwill can transcend borders.

What is emerging is far more than the construction of 108 Jangchub Chortens.

It is becoming a global movement of collective prayer, collective effort and collective aspiration.

Every contribution matters. Whether it is dedicating a chorten, making an offering, volunteering your time, sharing your skills or simply helping spread the word, each act becomes part of a shared offering dedicated to the benefit of all beings.

The invitation is now open to everyone.

Hearts of 108: Phuntsho Wangdi and Family

For most people, coins are simply currency. For Phuntsho Wangdi, they became a lifelong passion.

Today, Phuntsho Wangdi and his family join the Journey to 108 with an offering of Nu 108,000/- and over seven kilograms of coins towards Project 108.

During his years in the civil service in the 1990s, he developed a habit of collecting coins wherever his journeys took him, both within Bhutan and beyond. Over time, the collection grew to include coins from different eras, places, and histories. Among them are Bhutanese coins that have become increasingly rare in an age of banknotes and digital payments, as well as several special coins dating back to the eighteenth century.

One story stands out.

In 2001, while in Phuentsholing, he met a man from Cooch Behar who possessed a collection of old coins. Recognising their religious significance, Phuntsho Wangdi acquired them and carefully preserved them for more than two decades.

For years, these coins remained part of a cherished personal collection.

Then came Project 108.

When he learned of His Majesty The King's vision for the 108 Jangchub Chortens, Phuntsho Wangdi felt he had found the perfect purpose for them.

Rather than keeping them for himself, he chose to offer them as part of a project that seeks to create merit for generations to come.

The journey of these coins mirrors the spirit of Project 108. Passed through different hands, carried across places and generations, they now become part of a shared offering dedicated to the benefit of all beings.

As Project 108 continues to bring together people from all walks of life, stories such as these remind us that every contribution carries something unique. Sometimes it is labour. Sometimes it is resources. And sometimes, it is a lifetime of memories, carefully gathered and generously given.

Hearts of 108: Goob Sonam Dukpa

Goob Sonam Dukpa, businessman and founder of SD Eastern Ferro Alloys Ltd., joined the Journey to 108 with an offering of Nu 19,440,000/- (Ngultrum Nineteen Million Four Hundred Forty Thousand) towards one chorten under Project 108, Gelephu Mindfulness City.

The 108 chortens rising across Gelephu represent more than a physical undertaking. They embody a shared aspiration to create something meaningful that will endure for generations to come. For many, the opportunity to be part of such a moment comes only once in a lifetime.

Through this offering, Goob Sonam Dukpa becomes part of a journey that seeks to create merit, inspire unity and leave behind a legacy that extends far beyond the present day.

At its heart, Project 108 is about people. It is about the intentions, aspirations and goodwill that come together to create something larger than any one individual.

As Project 108 continues to bring together people from all walks of life, contributions such as this remind us that history is not only made by great events, but also by the individuals who choose to be part of them.

Hearts of 108: Sherig Bhutan

Every nation is built twice.

First in the minds and hearts of its people and then in the world around them.

For generations, Bhutan's education fraternity has quietly carried this responsibility. In classrooms, libraries, laboratories, ECCD centres and community learning centres across the country, they have nurtured curiosity, inspired dreams, instilled values and helped shape the citizens who would go on to serve the nation in countless ways.

Today, the Sherig Bhutan family comprising the Minister, Secretary, Dzongkhag and Thromde Education Officers, teachers, NFE instructors, librarians, laboratory technicians, ECCD facilitators and Community Learning Centre coordinators, united behind a shared aspiration to contribute towards the construction of one Jangchub Chorten.

Education has always been an act of faith in the future. Every lesson taught, every child encouraged and every opportunity created is an expression of hope that tomorrow can be better than today.

The education sector has spent generations building minds, nurturing character and strengthening the foundations of the nation, it now comes together to help build a lasting symbol of Bhutan's spiritual heritage and collective aspirations.

The Sherig Bhutan family reminds us that meaningful change is never the work of one individual alone. It is created when people come together around a shared purpose, each contributing what they can towards something greater than themselves.

Hearts of 108: Venerable Kuba Rinpoche

The Journey to 108 continues to bring together hearts from across the Buddhist world.

Venerable Kuba Rinpoche (Ven. Nanasamvara Kruba Boonchum), a revered Buddhist master from Thailand, has joined Project 108 through a contribution towards one chorten.

His offering carries special significance. It reflects the spirit of compassion, generosity and shared aspiration that transcends borders, traditions and nations.

Through the support of spiritual leaders like Kuba Rinpoche, the 108 Chortens become more than a Bhutanese undertaking, they become a collective expression of faith dedicated to the benefit of all beings.

We offer our heartfelt gratitude for his kindness, blessings and support.

Hearts of 108: Semthuen Tshokpa

As Bhutan comes together to build the 108 Jangchub Chortens in Gelephu Mindfulness City, a group of 108 Bhutanese have come together with a shared aspiration of their own.

Known as Semthuen Tshokpa and led by former Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup, the group brings together former Lyonpos, Dashos, senior civil servants, professionals, business leaders and other individuals whose lives have been shaped by decades of service to the nation.

Though their paths have been different, they share a common bond: a lifelong commitment to Bhutan.

Today, that commitment finds expression in a new way.

In support of His Majesty The King's noble vision, the Semthuen Tshokpa came together to make an offering of Nu 23,309,879/- (Ngultrum Twenty-Three Million Three Hundred Nine Thousand Eight Hundred Seventy-Nine) towards the construction of a Jangchub Chorten under Project 108.

For many of these individuals, a lifetime has already been spent serving Bhutan in government offices, schools, institutions, businesses and communities across the country. They have carried responsibility, shaped policies, guided institutions and contributed to nation-building in countless ways.

Yet even after their years of formal service, their desire to contribute endures.

Their offering is more than support for a sacred structure. It is an expression of gratitude for the nation that shaped them, faith in Bhutan's future and a belief that service to one's country does not end with a title, position or profession.

Project 108 is built on the idea that every contribution becomes part of something larger than ourselves. Through this collective act, the members of Semthuen Tshokpa add their chapter to a shared story of faith, aspiration and nationhood.

Their example reminds us that the deepest forms of service are not measured by rank or recognition, but by a continuing willingness to give back.

Why Project 108?

On 21 February 2026, His Majesty The King announced a profound vision: the construction of 108 Jangchub Chortens in Gelephu.

Since then, thousands have responded. Volunteers are signing up. Individuals, institutions, and friends from around the world have joined a shared journey of merit, aspiration and service.

But why 108?

In Buddhism, 108 is a sacred number, the beads of a mala, the 108 afflictive emotions to be transformed into wisdom and compassion. It represents wholeness, purification and the path toward awakening.

Inspired by this meaning, 108 Jangchub Chortens will rise along the Mau Chhu in Gelephu Mindfulness City, each placed 108 metres apart, forming a continuous line of prayer across the landscape.

A chorten is never just a structure. It is an offering of enlightenment, devotion and merit, dedicated to the wellbeing of all beings. Each of the 108 will carry intentions of love, remembrance, peace and compassion, becoming part of one collective aspiration.

Yet the true meaning of Project 108 is not found in numbers or stone.
It is found in people.

Rooted in the Bhutanese tradition of Zhabto, this is an act of collective devotion. On 1 November 2026, more than 40,000 people will gather across all 108 sites to complete the structures together.

What is taking shape is more than a construction effort.

It is a movement of collective prayer, collective effort and shared aspiration, bringing together supporters and volunteers, monastics and lay practitioners, Bhutanese and friends from around the world.

In a time often marked by division, Project 108 offers a quieter truth that something meaningful can still be built through unity, generosity and shared purpose.

When the 108 Chortens rise together, they will stand not only as symbols of faith, but as a testament to what humanity can create when guided by compassion for all beings.

Hearts of 108: Ms Dฦฐฦกng Thแป‹ Hแป“ng Hแบกnh

Project 108 continues to bring together hearts from across the world, united by a shared aspiration to create something meaningful for generations to come.

Today, Ms Dฦฐฦกng Thแป‹ Hแป“ng Hแบกnh from Vietnam joined the Journey to 108 with an offering towards one chorten under Project 108.

Though separated by distance and geography, acts such as these remind us that the values at the heart of Project 108 transcend borders. The wish to create merit, cultivate compassion and contribute to the well-being of others is a language understood across cultures and nations.

Every chorten within Project 108 carries a story. Some begin in Bhutan. Others begin far beyond our borders and find their way to the Gelephu Mindfulness City through a shared belief in faith, goodwill and collective aspiration.

Through her offering, Ms Dฦฐฦกng Thแป‹ Hแป“ng Hแบกnh becomes part of a journey that is larger than any one individual, a journey built upon the hopes, prayers and goodwill of people who choose to contribute towards something that will endure for generations.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to her for becoming part of this shared journey of merit and aspiration.

Hearts of 108: TKI Group

Rooted in the teachings of the Buddha and strengthened by the enduring friendship between our Royal Families, Bhutan and Thailand share a special bond.

Today, that bond takes on a new expression as TKI Perpetual Co. Ltd. from the Kingdom of Thailand joins the Journey to 108 with a commitment towards three chortens under Project 108.

This contribution carries a significance that extends beyond the physical structures themselves.

As two Buddhist monarchies, Bhutan and Thailand share a deep spiritual heritage. Across generations, the friendship between our nations has flourished through shared values, mutual respect and a common reverence for the teachings that continue to guide our societies.

It is therefore especially meaningful to see this offering become part of Project 108.

In Buddhist tradition, the number three holds profound significance. It represents the Three Jewels (the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha), which form the foundation of Buddhist faith and practice. The commitment towards three chortens is a beautiful reflection of these timeless values and the shared spiritual heritage that connects our two kingdoms.

Project 108 is a collective act of merit that transcends borders, bringing together friends from around the world in a shared aspiration to create something meaningful for generations to come. It is a reminder that faith, goodwill and the wish to benefit others can unite people across nations and cultures.

Through this commitment, TKI Group becomes part of a story larger than any one project, a story of friendship between nations, shared Buddhist values and people coming together to build something that will endure long into the future.

Note: โ€œHearts of 108โ€ is a series dedicated to the hearts behind Project 108. Every contribution, whether through labour, resources, prayers or support, becomes part of a shared act of merit. Because Project 108 was never meant to be about concrete, stone or numbers. At its heart, it is about people.

Hearts of 108: Foresters of Bhutan

In the 1980s, a seed was planted.

As Patron of the Forest Department, His Royal Highness Prince Namgay Wangchuck established the Forest Welfare Fund with a seed contribution of Nu 50,000 and a vision that foresters would always stand together in support of one another.

Over the decades, that seed grew.

Nurtured by the contributions of generations of foresters, past and present, the Fund became a living testament to solidarity, service and shared responsibility.

This afternoon, on the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuenโ€™s Birth Anniversary, that seed bore fruit in a remarkable way.

Drawing from the Forest Welfare Fund, Bhutanโ€™s foresters came together to make an offering of Nu 20 million towards one chorten under Project 108.

For those who dedicate their lives to caring for forests, the meaning is profound.

Foresters understand better than most that the most meaningful things in life take time. A sapling planted today may take decades to reach its full strength. The person who plants it may never sit beneath its shade, yet does so with faith in the future.

A chorten carries that same spirit.

Built not for ourselves, but for generations to come, it stands as a symbol of aspiration, merit and the wish to create lasting benefit beyond our own lifetime.

In many ways, this offering reflects the very values that have guided Bhutanโ€™s foresters for generations of patience, stewardship and a commitment to protecting what must endure.

Just as a seed planted decades ago continues to bear fruit today, may this offering become a source of blessings and inspiration for generations yet to come.
