The Moonflower Room is a space to celebrate the people, plants and philosophies of The Bahamas specifically and the Caribbean generally as paths to revolutionary healing. Dining club meals will feature mezze-style plant-based (meat and dairy free) meals crafted with local ingredients in my signature style fusing Caribbean, Mediterranean and North African flavors and techniques. Community events wi
ll allow people to come together in an intimate supportive environment to discuss pressing social and political issues. Artist Statement
Moonflowers bloom at night, emitting intoxicating fragrances. A variety of tropical and sub-tropical traditional spiritual and healing traditions invoke their powerful feminine energy to facilitate physical and psycho-spiritual healing. “The Moonflower Room” is a space meant to summon the Moonflower’s botanical spirit. Its foundation corresponds with my doctoral research about intentional food practices and journeys of consciousness among a group of people I interviewed in Nassau. Much of my intellectual foundation is based on political philosophies with traditional masculine orientations. I became drawn to theories centering the radical capacity for healing and love because they have been more effective in facilitating transformation on my personal journey of consciousness. While my research grows out of the challenges of the nation—particularly as they relate to food, health, and sustainability, I chose to conduct research that illuminated how Bahamians are forging sustainability, wellness, healing, food security, and the development of autonomous identities despite the complex realities of everyday life in The Bahamas. The space—which includes books, multimedia resources, local foods, local bush plants, and community events—corresponds with my interpretation of interviewees’ hopes and dreams for the future. It is meant to reflect the beauty and sense of wholeness I have received as a result of my research and life in Nassau.
“The Moonflower Room” conveys material, cultural and ecological resources in The Bahamas that are facilitating the only real revolution—that which occurs when we seek courageously to claim our journeys of individual and collective healing for ourselves. About Hilary
