Bridging the Generations -appreciation across generations.

A 16-year-old bass in the Youth Choir did not grow up in a time when you had to struggle and might not have ever listened to folk music. They have Spotify. If our SATB arrangement sounds like a dusty artifact, they will reject it. But if we retain the driving energy of the rhythm while cleaning up the harmony enough to be accessible, a miracle happens.

I witnessed it last month. We performed an arranged medley of "Stand Up" In the front row sat a group of grandmothers, tears streaming down their faces, swaying. In the back row stood the young choristers, grinning, tapping their feet, realizing that these ancient rhythms were actually cool.

The grandmothers heard the validation—the correct origins, the respectful research, the authentic lilt. The youth heard the arrangement—the lush SATB chords, the dynamic shifts, the cinematic crescendos.

🇧🇸 When the tub was tin, and the news stayed outside. 🧺🎶

One of the core mandates of The Bahamas National Youth Choir is to preserve Bahamian folk music. But preservation isn’t just about the notes we sing—it’s in the fabric we wear, the way we move on stage, and the stories our bodies tell without saying a word.

In Fanshawn Evans piece “Keep People Business Out Ya Mouth,” we take you back. Back to wash days with a tin tub. Back to clothes dancing on the line in the island breeze. Back when folks knew the difference between news and nuisance.

🎭 We’re keeping Bahamian culture alive—not just in harmony, but in motion, in style, in the lift of an eyebrow and the sway of a skirt.

🎤 Support The Bahamas National Youth Choir. Because the good old days deserve to be sung and seen.

Y’all, we almost lost our soprano Zhane Mackey to the spirit of the stage. 🎭

This year, Zhane made her Dundas Centre debut—her first time performing there with our BNYC family. And chile… each night, a different character showed up. One night a timid woman, next night she’s a courtroom cross-examiner. 😂

But the real moment? The adrenaline hit her so hard, I got scared. I looked at her mid-aria and thought, “What else can an angry Bahamian woman use...?” Then I remembered Pat Rahming’s immortal words: “When a Baintown woman catches a fire, even the devil runs.” 💨👹

So, shout-out to Zhane for nearly sending us all to confession. We love you, girl. Next time, just warn us before you summon the ancestors mid-crescendo into the fight. 🇧🇸🎶

We sing because they preserved. 🎶

The Bahamas National Youth Choir mourns the loss of Mr. Johnson, a.k.a Bo Hog, a.k.a Pompey Johnson, a pillar of Bahamian folklore (Bo Hog & the Rooters from Cat Island). His dedication to keeping the authentic melodies of The Bahamas alive has paved the way for generations of musicians.

Thank you for your contribution to the soundtrack of our nation. May you rest in peace, sir. 🕊️🇧🇸
