I recently began a program to help youth who are in School. My business isn't doing anything now so volunteering helps. Initially, they said it would be about 12 children and only boys but before the session was fully involved more were added including some girls. There was another teacher there who merely assisted as I was showing them how to make kites. They give me an entirely different group of boys only on day two.
I also wanted to build trust with them on my own regardless of their attitude or behaviour. I told them I would be teaching them about kites and other things. One boy asked why he was there on day one since school was there to teach him. I told him I am there to fill in what he may not get from the school like kite making. I told the teacher how I would use the art of kite making to instill in them ideas and present them with better ways to communicate and respond to their challenges. I spoke to them on the first day of how kites need force to fly. I illustrated to them that all things can be used for good or not so good things. I asked them what all was needed to fly a kite. They gave answers like wind, string and paper. Then one boy said the kite. Sometimes, we are not taught to look for the obvious. He saw it.
I pointed out to them that even though the kite needed wind, if the wind was too strong (force), it could damage the kite. I showed them how sometimes we can destroy some things and they may not be able to be restored. The boy who asked why he was there before the 45 minutes was over was well involved in kite making once he saw that I spent time to show him how it is done. Day two was much better in that there were no disruptions. I was able to show them that they were all engineers in that they would make their own kite and use only paper. I saw another very intelligent boy who thought things out. He showed great perception. The others have ability but that has been overshadowed by how people interact with them and their response to that interaction. One came late and took to the challenge simply by looking at a kite that was already made and even received assistance from some of the others. I did, however, have to remind another late-comer that we would not laugh at anyone while we were together. I didn't give them any rules but only pointed out as we went along what I expected. I believe they have enough rules but few guides.
