Off to CDMX on Friday for Zona Maco! We will be presenting a solo booth at Feria Material with our artist Tiago Mestre (Portugal, 1978), who has an exhibition coming up at the SESC Pompeia Museum in Sao Paulo.

Through these series of paintings, the artist focuses on the discursive arrangements produced in the encounter between nature and culture, as well as the ability to relate critically with the achievements of the project of modernity.

Looking forward to the week of Zona Maco in Mexico City where we will be showing new works by Tiago Mestre at Material Art Fair.

“My work really happens in the show. There's always a spatial aspect that brings several works together, creating a discourse”. - Tiago Mestre

Tiago Mestre's (Portugal, 1978) practice evolves around the idea of displacement, both in terms of discipline and territory. Originally trained as an architect, his sculptures and installations reflect his status as a Portuguese artist living and working in Brazil, as well as, the historical associations of human and artistic flows between both countries.

His work actively resists a singular reading and engages with different symbolic and anthropological registers. Ceramics as sculpture appears in his practice with this aim of displacement, causing a process of redefinition and reframing of its mediums. Using materials such as clay, bronze, plaster, and paint, he establishes a constant negotiation between project and unpredictability. His paintings and sculptures share technical procedures (on production) and modes of display (on reception), presenting themselves more as questioning systems than as fixed genres or statutes. Most recently, his work focuses on the ability to relate critically with the achievements of the project of modernity, its controversial key figures, and its artistic myths and narratives of originality, development, and social organization. Tiago Mestre currently lives and works in Brazil.

Fascinating work by James Hillmas is now on display at ‘Georgraphies of Memory’ exhibition

James Hillman’s practice develops around modern and bucolic notions of manual craftsmanship. The dialogue between the two sides results in the generation of images that confuse classical pictorial languages with those of industrial manufacturing and digital aesthetics. Many of the works require machines specially built in the artist's studio for their production. Hillman’s practice presents craftsmanship as an element to understand tradition and as a vessel for collective memory and history.

Incredible work by Lucas Arruda on view in our exhibition Geographies of Memory.

Many of Lucas Arruda’s (Brazil, 1983) dense, atmospheric paintings appear to be fields of pure abstraction at first glance, yet upon closer inspection, they reveal dreamlike depictions of oceans, twilight or sunrise, and rolling banks of fog or clouds —the compositions remain ambiguous enough for multiple readings. Arruda paints these enigmatic scenes from memory, unmooring them from geographical specificity and letting them pulse with imagined serenity and power. The artist generates a mysterious ambience with his muted, subtly shifting palettes and evocative, scratchy brushwork. Still other canvases depict more explicit scenes of beaches and dense forests.

Beautiful works by George Shaw currently on view in our gallery as part of our show Geographies of Memory.

George Shaw paintings evoke a feeling of nostalgia through the depiction of streets and landscapes that mostly make reference to the council state where he grew up in Coventry. At a first glance, these realistic depictions might seem purely representational however, they unlock the artist’s personal past giving the viewer access to those childhood memories which have configured to a certain extent the artist’s identity. Shaw is capable of transcending the classic cliches of landscape painting suggesting deeper feelings of sadness and melancholy through the delicate contrast of light and darkness and by including elements like litter or graffiti to manifest the previous presence of someone in that space.
