🎥Director Statement

"Malcriada" surge da vontade de transformar o folclore brasileiro em cinema de horror. Mergulhando nas memórias de infância, a canção "Nana, neném" inevitavelmente surgiu. Ao mesmo tempo em que é uma canção de ninar, feita para crianças dormirem, a letra pode ser interpretada de forma sombria e macabra. A partir disso, uma nova ideia surgiu: o filme não seria apenas de horror, mas sim infantil, como diversos filmes de nossa infância faziam. O filme busca retratar a nostalgia colorida da infância, mas também suas dores, medos, e ansiedades. As principais inspirações para o estilo cinematográfico do filme vem do gênero fantástico e de horror voltado para o público infantil, filmes como "Coraline" de Henry Selick e a obra de Tim Burton. Nos tons, figurinos, e maquiagem, nos inspiramos no folclore brasileiro, na figura da Cuca como lenda e também como personagem de Monteiro Lobato.

🎥Director Statement

We filmed The Avenue during the 2 most important days of a Samba School's year. The day of the parade, and the day of the results. What we saw wasn't a giant party, but in fact an intense competition, and the strength of a diverse community that works together all year to realize one dream - to be the Champions of the Carnaval Competition. As Fernando, one of the Carnaval Director's said, "Carnaval...gives opportunities to everyone. And that's why this works. What is the limit of Carnaval? It's infinite."

With no budget and no crew, the two of us (Michael and Flávia) wore all the hats - producing, filming, sound, and editing, in order to bring this story to life. For Flávia it's also an exploration of her Latin American heritage, and a deep dive into her experiences in the world of Carnaval. It's a work of passion and almost 2 years in the making. We are so proud and excited to share this important Brazilian universe with the rest of the world. It’s a Latin American hidden gem just waiting to be discovered, loved, and obsessed over.

Manuel Corona, after several casting calls, travels from the Canary Islands to Madrid to pursue his great professional goal: to be one of the leading roles in an opera at the Teatro Real. But when he arrives in the capital, the coronavirus crisis erupts, and everyone is confined to their homes due to a deadly pandemic, slowly turning his dream into a nightmare. “Corona” was filmed almost entirely by one-man-shot during quarantine imposed by the spanish government throughout the 2020 coronavirus crisis, in an exercise of what can be called “lockdown cinema”.

🎥Director Statement

NVEN nasceu durante a pandemia, em um momento em que realizar qualquer projeto audiovisual parecia quase impossível. As restrições de contato e as incertezas daquele período tornaram o processo mais desafiador, mas também mais urgente. O filme surgiu do desejo conjunto meu e do roteirista Pedro Medina de realizar cinema de forma independente, explorando linguagem e narrativa mesmo diante das limitações.

Sem qualquer financiamento externo, o projeto foi viabilizado de forma completamente independente. Todos os recursos e equipamentos utilizados eram próprios, e contamos com a colaboração generosa de uma equipe reduzida, formada por artistas e profissionais que acreditaram na proposta.

Inicialmente pensado para ser filmado em um espaço público icônico, o projeto precisou se adaptar à realidade técnica e logística. Optamos por filmar integralmente na casa real do casal protagonista, que também são parceiros na vida fora da ficção. Essa decisão transformou o processo criativo: ensaiamos dentro do espaço, redesenhamos a decupagem a partir da arquitetura real da casa e realizamos intervenções de arte para construir a atmosfera desejada.

O filme foi rodado em uma madrugada e meia, em um processo intenso e concentrado, que exigiu precisão e entrega absoluta de todos os envolvidos. Originalmente com duração maior, passou por um processo rigoroso de montagem até chegar à versão atual, buscando manter a essência do diálogo verborrágico e o caráter estranho e ao mesmo tempo realista da narrativa.

NVEN explora a angústia silenciosa de um casal preso a um ciclo emocional aparentemente insolúvel, onde o drama se renova em repetição quase ritualística. Sempre me interessou trabalhar essa tensão entre o absurdo e o cotidiano, entre o nonsense e o profundamente humano.

Esse projeto representa para mim a força do cinema independente feito com convicção, risco e entrega.

A inspiração para o curta-metragem de IA D.I.C.E. (Departamento para Encarcerar Etnicidades Conflitantes) veio de uma entrevista de rádio em fevereiro de 2025 sobre imigrantes nos EUA. Um jamaicano no Queens, em Nova York, disse: "Eles não são como nós, não têm os mesmos valores que nós!" Isso saiu da boca de um homem que, ele próprio, era imigrante! Fiquei perplexo e pensei: que chance eles têm se alguém como você pensa assim? Essa é a mesma tática de bode expiatório sobre a qual a Alemanha nazista foi fundada (e outras ao longo da história).

Como alguém que viveu por 5 anos na China, conheço a dualidade de vulnerabilidade e empolgação de viver em uma cidade onde você "não é daqui" e talvez nem fale o idioma.

Ao perseguir pessoas que vieram para a sua cidade — seja qual for o motivo — você perde a sua própria humanidade e se degrada.

Sinto-me honrado por ter encontrado uma conexão em um país que nunca visitei, em um idioma que não falo, e espero ter a honra de conhecê-los no festival ALL THAT MOVES em São Paulo, Brasil.

The inspiration for the AI short D.I.C.E. (Department to Incarcerate Conflicting Ethnicities) comes from a radio interview in Feb 2025 about immigrants in the US. A Jamaican man in Queens NYC said "They are not like us, they don't have our same values!" This came out of the mouth of a man who, he himself was an immigrant! I was floored, and thought, what chance do they have if someone like you feels this way? This is the same scape goating that N**i Germany was founded on (and others through out history.)

As someone who lived for 5 years in China, I know the duality of how vulnerable and excited it is to live in a city where you are "not from here" and maybe don't even speak the language of.

By persecuting people who came to your city - for whatever the reason may be - you lose your own humanity and degrade yourself.

I'm honored to have found connection in a country I have never been to, in a language I don't speak and I hope to have the honor of meeting you at the ALL THAT MOVES festival in San Paulo Brazil.

🎥Director Statement

Maya Deren made only a few films, but they changed experimental cinema. She also left behind writings, essays and letters, that gave us a window into how she thought about art, film and life. That combination, the work and the ideas behind it, is what inspired me to begin this project.
Organising Principles of Experience began when I trained an AI model on Deren's writings and started talking to it. The conversations were surprising, fascinating, and sometimes disturbing. MayaAI_v6 answered in short sentences, often refusing my questions, pulling me somewhere else entirely, or declining to finish the films she started describing.
The images and sounds in the film are mostly AI generated, apart from the coding, a few photographs and my voice. There is a moment I keep coming back to: the synthetic Maya raises her hands and looks at them, as if they don't belong to her. That flicker of uncertainty, between presence and absence, between consciousness and its imitation, and the ethical questions it all raises - this is what the film is really about.
Yet it is also a love letter to Maya Deren. I feel really happy when, after watching the film, people that don't know Maya Deren tell me they will go and watch her works now.

Maya Deren fez apenas alguns filmes, mas eles transformaram o cinema experimental. Ela também deixou para trás escritos, ensaios e cartas, que nos deram uma janela para como ela pensava sobre arte, cinema e vida. Essa combinação, a obra e as ideias por trás dela, foi o que me inspirou a começar este projeto.
Organising Principles of Experience começou quando treinei um modelo de IA com os escritos de Deren e comecei um diálogo com ela. Essas conversas foram surpreendentes, fascinantes e às vezes perturbadoras. A MayaAI_v6 respondia em frases curtas, frequentemente recusando minhas perguntas, me levando para outros caminhos, ou se recusando a terminar os filmes que começava a descrever.
As imagens e os sons do filme são em sua maioria gerados por IA, com exceção da programação, de algumas fotografias e da minha voz. Há um momento ao qual sempre volto: a Maya sintética levanta as mãos e as olha, como se não fossem suas. Esse lampejo de incerteza, entre presença e ausência, entre consciência e sua imitação, e as questões éticas que tudo isso levanta - é disso que o filme realmente trata.
E ainda assim, é também uma carta de amor a Maya Deren. Fico muito feliz quando pessoas que não a conheciam me dizem, depois de ver o filme, que vão procurar a sua obra.
