The piano has fallen quiet. Born in Cape Town, Abdullah Ibrahim gave the world his love of jazz, a sound that carried hope. “Mannenberg” was never just a song; it was an anthem. Nelson Mandela called him his country’s Mozart. We knew him as a giant whose hands turned a keyboard into a prayer. A few days ago, we celebrated him as South Africa’s voice in our World Cup of Jazz. Today we play his records a little louder, with a little more gratitude. Rest gently, Maestro. The music remains.

Today marks 100 years since Miles Davis was born. This December, as Bahrain Jazz Fest enters its 10th year, we honour the icon who made jazz the most fearless genre in music, a living, breathing, shape-shifting art form that sounded different every decade he played in because he showed us it could. Happy 100th Birthday, Miles Davis.
