We're very saddened to hear of the passing of Andy Warhol's friend, the singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist and businesswoman Dolly Parton.

Singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and cultural icon Dolly Parton passed away today at the age of 80. Dolly's larger-than-life career spanned decades, as she rose to become one of the most recognizable figures in American culture while donating hundreds of millions of dollars over her lifetime to fund scientific research, literacy initiatives, and free books for children. National Geographic photographer Jodi Cobb captured Parton in her first decade of stardom for our May 1978 feature on Nashville’s vibrant culture. Here are some of those archival images—including several that have never been published before.

The Lady of Shalott 🖼️ ✨

John William Waterhouse's painting from 1888 illustrates a verse in Alfred Tennyson’s 1832 poem, ‘The Lady of Shalott’. It tells the story of a woman who suffers under an undisclosed curse, and is forbidden to look directly at the world. She sees outside only through its reflection in a mirror.

When she glimpses the reflected image of the knight Sir Lancelot, she cannot resist looking at him directly. She falls in love, the mirror cracks, and she feels the curse come upon her. The punishment results in her drifting in a boat downstream to find Lancelot, but dying before she reaches him. Waterhouse illustrates the Lady of Shalott on her last journey in the cold world. 💐
