Obituary: Voice actor Sam Mowry passed away at age 64

Sam Mowry, a voice actor for League of Legends and other games, passed away this weekend at 64 years old.
Per Oregon Arts Watch, Mowry went into cardiac arrest while preparing for surgery to alleviate arterial blockage.
In League, Mowry played the character of Rhaast. Other notable credits include Dota 2 (as the Anti-Mage), Sly 2: Band of Thieves (Arpeggio), Infamous (Kessler), and Amnesia: The Dark Descent (Alexander).
"For the voice of a Darkin, Sam was a bastion of light," wrote Riot. "It was an honor to work with him and he will live on as a part of Runeterra forever."
Outside of games, Mowry performed in Portland theaters and in radio dramas. He co-founded the Willamette Radio Workshop in 2001 and performed in musical versions of Sherlock Holmes and The Jungle Book.
Mowry is survived by his wife Cindy McGean and their son Atticus..

Report: Xbox Game Pass may expand with more subscription tiers

A new report from Windows Central (spotted by VGC) claims Microsoft is preparing to introduce even more wrinkles to Xbox Game Pass.
Ahead of an additional plan and price hike for all tiers in September, it's now claimed a cloud-only subscription is being explored. It's expected to be cheaper and "more approachable" than Game Pass Ultimate, but a specific price range wasn't listed.
This plan is allegedly aimed more toward non-Xbox owners, and potentially even players on other consoles. This one might also let players stream titles they already own via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

What exactly is a 'gamer' and why does it matter?

What does the word 'gamer' actually mean? Imo Kaufman, a PHD student at the University of Nottingham who has been conducting research in collaboration with the National Videogame Museum, sought to unpack the term at during another breakneck Hyper Talk at AMAZE Sheffield.
Taking to the stage for just five minutes, Kaufman explains she wants to unpack the identity and experiences that surround the term–for both players and developers. "My research is about oral history, which means I interview people about what they think about and feel about games," she says. "But importantly I look at gaming culture, not video games themselves."

The Epic Games Store debuts on AltStore, Android, and iOS devices

Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sideswipe have dropped back onto iOS and Android handsets via The Epic Games Store. As promised earlier this year, Epic will use its marketplace to relaunch key titles on mobile platforms following a protracted legal battle with Apple and Google.
The Epic Game Store is currently available for download on iPhone within the European Union, where the recently introduced Digital Markets Act prohibits Apple from blocking third-party platforms. It will also be accessible on Android devices worldwide and independent mobile stores including AltStore PAL.

Creative UK's latest fund offers up to £25K to North East teams

Creative UK has started a fund targeted at small and medium-sized 'creative businesses' in North East England. The non-profit organization says its aim is to "give recipients the creative freedom to solely test ideas and develop a new product or service for the benefit of the sector."
The North East Shared Success Fund is aimed at enterprises in North Tyneside, Newcastle, and Northumberland, and offers up to £25,000 in funding for projects such as film, TV, and games.
Recipients will also be provided "tailor support" like workshops and one-on-one mentoring. Once the project succeeds or hits a certain financial threshold, they will be required to pay the funding back interest-free.

Kabam shuts down Disney Mirrorverse after 2.5 years

Kabam Entertainment is shutting down Disney Mirrorverse on December 16 and has already pulled the mobile action RPG from Android and iOS stores.
A specific reason wasn't given for the sunsetting, but the studio said players who still have the game downloaded can keep playing until the end date, including "remaining content released over the coming weeks which wraps up this Mirrorverse storyline."
In-app purchases have also been stopped in preparation for the December 16 shutdown date.
Mirrorverse was released in 2022 and marked Kabam's third Disney game after Marvel Contest of Champions and Star Wars: Uprising. The game featured several Disney characters reimagined in an original storyline.
