In her creative practice, Gönül Nuhoğlu exploresthe complexities of human nature as a driving forcethat can disrupt the structures of political systems. Inthe exhibition *Non nobis solum nati sumus*, shepresents the world as a space filled with paradoxicaloppositions. Her works juxtapose human figures andfaces—seemingly taken from everyday life—alongside objects from daily existence that carrytraces of dehumanization and war. These imagesserve as a representation of the boundaries ofidentity, exploring how individuals relate to others. Nuhoğlu focuses on the modern dysfunction inhuman relationships and the challenges ofcommunication in multicultural societies.
An additional layer in her work is the use oflanguage, which interacts uniquely with the visualelements. The exhibition’s title, *Non nobis solumnati sumus*, references a motto from Cicero’sphilosophical writings: “non nobis solum nati sumusortusque nostri partem patria vindicat, partem amici”which embodies the Stoic ideal of cosmopolitanism. This philosophy emphasizes the belief that all humanbeings are interconnected, forming a unified whole, and should contribute to the common good throughacts of kindness and mutual support.
Nuhoğlu metaphorically expresses the idea thatconcepts can be both delicate and powerful throughher choice of materials like metal and glass. Theinterplay between shine and transparency, the coolenigma of polished metal, and the careful attention todetail create both attraction and distance. Thisreflects a central characteristic of the social fabric – its ability to generate life-affirming and destructiveinstincts, coexisting in a fragile balance. In her work, Nuhoğlu continually tests this balance, creatingsculptures that depict a surreal world where doubtand hope exist together on the edge of dreams andreality.
