One of the hardest decisions in painting has nothing to do with paint.
Knowing when to 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽.

One more layer.
One more adjustment.
One more detail.

And then suddenly... one step too far.
Every artist knows that feeling.

Sometimes the final brushstroke isn’t the last one you make.
It’s the one you decide not to make. 👌

A good canvas needs to follow that movement without resisting it.

Some connections only surface decades later.

While researching the materials used by 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑬𝒏𝒔𝒐𝒓, references emerged linking part of his later work to canvases from Claessens in Waregem.

Back then, it was simply a working canvas; made to be painted on.
Today, it becomes part of a much longer story. 📋

Before a canvas is ready, it gets sealed.
Twice.

Two layers of glue - each one dried before the next.
It’s what keeps the paint on the surface instead of letting it sink into the fibres.

You don’t see it.
But you feel it in every brushstroke.

With 107 submissions and 14 selected artists, the 𝗚𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗷𝘀 2026 once again shows where painting stands today - and where it is heading.
Congratulations to 𝗝𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗷𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘁 , laureate of the Gaverprijs, and to all selected artists who brought forward their own voice and perspective.

At Claessens, we are proud to support this edition with the public prize - because recognition doesn’t only come from expertise, but also from connection. 🫶
