HERMIT CRAB
(Paguroidea)

Hermit crabs are crustaceans with a soft, vulnerable abdomen, which they protect by living in empty snail shells. These shells not only shield them from predators, but also help retain water. This is essential for respiration, especially in land-dwelling species.

As they grow, hermit crabs must regularly move into larger shells. Sometimes they evict other crabs, but more often they wait for an empty shell or take part in an organized exchange.

During such an exchange, several crabs gather around a large empty shell. Lined up by size, each one moves into the shell just vacated by the crab ahead. This process, known as a “synchronous vacancy chain,” allows many individuals to quickly find a better-fitting home without conflict.

Lionfish
The most successful invasive fish in the world

Originally from the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the lionfish has rapidly spread to the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean seas.

With no natural predators and a fast reproductive cycle, it disrupts marine ecosystems by consuming large numbers of young reef fish. This leads to algae overgrowth, coral decline, and reduced biodiversity.

I created a sculpture of a lionfish skeleton as a quiet symbol of the destruction this species brings to ecosystems where it doesn’t belong.

-The Magdeburg Unicorn -

145 x 110 x 50 cm
Paper, epoxy, aluminum

In 1663, bones of a woolly rhinoceros and other Ice Age animals were found.
Prussian scientist Otto von Guericke thought these bones were from a unicorn.
And reconstructed it into the Magdeburg unicorn.
This work is considered the most deformed reconstruction of a fossil ever made by mankind.

This work is part of the expo HYBRIDEN Curated by & .

in Turnhout and runs until 17/11/2024.
