[Sept. 1st - 3rd 1944]

September 1st 1944 : We were moving from VERINS to LA CAPELLE when my squad encounter
Our first surrending german group, it seems like throughout the day the Div. made around 500 POW’s
First we shearched them but at the end of the day we were juste sending them to the rear.
It was a bit weird as a situation, but they definitively looks a lot less intimidating like that.

September 2nd 1944 : It seems like we are the first American troops to enter on the Belgian soil even if the CCA said that it was them. We met an enemy column, and had a little hook up with them. But we managed to stop it, and to gain even more POW’s

We were send to clean some aera this night, a lot of little enemy groups were also made prisoner. Where the f**k will we put them all ?

September 3 1944 : We are tired and hungry after this night and what did we learn this morning ? We didn’t received our supply, so we are blocked on the objective until the Big Red One come relieve us. We can only wait, but at least we can rest a bit.

Auguste 28 : One year since I started this sketch book.
We reached Soisson this evening. As always, we are greeting by the population. We receive a lot of gift, like wine food etc… and a lot of the boys take advantage to kiss French girls. Even they are enthusiastic to do it most of the time, a lot of use use of their statu of liberator. I heard a lot of stories of r*apes by our troops since we landed in Normandy. I don’t f*cking understand how our command do nothing about it, it’s F. disgusting

August 29 1944 : I don’t know where did Baldo got this bike from, but it was very funny to bike around while everyone else had the order to reinforce our position before moving again.
So here is a quick sketch of Baldo and jerry around Soisson.

August 30 1944 : We carried on the advance made on the other side of the bridgehead over the Aisne river.

We met a slight resistance but nothing serious, no real casualties today.

August 31 1944 : After a little delay before moving this morning, and some engagement with enemy’s troops we made it to Notre Dame de Liesse. In fact we had to change orders during the day. First we had to protect the flank of the division. But thanks to our delay this morning np change in direction were needed. We should reach Marle and Hary by night.

August 13 1944 : August 13 1944 : We passed 3 days to reorganize our troops, and defend our position, it was pretty calm for us.
Today we moved towards Joué-Du-Bois.
On the way enemies machine guns and AT guns fired at our column. We were blocked on the road, trapped with our vehicles. Then two P-47 passed over our heads, firing at the enemy positions. They were beautiful! On each pass, we were able to see a column of smoke rising were the jug had hit. Eventually we had air support the whole day.

August 14 1944 : M8 Greyhound in the streets of “Joué-du-Bois”
We attacked joué-do-boys by the north after taking the high ground behind it. The town was clear by the end of the day.
As we weren’t able to pass by the south due to the enemies, we passed by the east to take the high ground, then we had to clear the streets by the rear.

August 15 1944 : We took position around Ranes, While the rest of the regiment led an attack on Poutanges.
With the objective of defending the area, we settled down on a farm.
The day was pretty calm, we had the opportunity to rest a bit and play cards when we weren’t on guard duty.

August 16 : We went back to the front line, but still pretty calm. I heard that the German situation here in Normandy was not really good.

Despite our losses of those last days, our morale is pretty high.
It feels like, I don’t know, we are less impacted
I mean I don’t know if it would have been so “easy” to accept death in the civil life.
Even if I am still thinking about Eugene. It has been 8 days now. But it seems already like a few weeks ago. I wonder if his family already knows. I can’t imagine if it was mine. Poor peoples.
Eventually we had air support the whole day.

[August 6 1944] rest at Reffuveille: we had a day off this day. We moved to rest area lines at reffuveille. A war photographer was there and took a photo of me, he gave it to me this morning (Aug. 7). I will send the original one home. Our Sgt told me that µi would be promoted corporal because of the high casualty, my action on June 28 and what happened last night. Another guy was promoted by me, everyone called him “Baldo”, he’s a great guy!
We had hot food and were able to sleep on beds, army beds, but still better than the ground. It gave us a moral boost. Unfortunately, we had to move this morning.

[August 8 1944] Eugene never told me how old he was, but I don’t think he was older than me, around 20, maybe 22.
We encounter heavy mortars and artillery shelling. I don’t really know what killed him, Tom only told me later that he were hit and didn’t survive. F*cking Krauts

[August 9 1944] All the regiments suffer heavy casualties, even the tanks.
We had the order to attack a small town, I don’t remember the name. Those Germans would not let it go.
Both our Col. and Lt Col. were KIA
Seems like our moral boost was quickly taken down

[August 10 1944] F*ck that, there is more artillery than rain here!
It has been 3 f**king days, that they pound us
They even launched a fierce counterattack, do you think we will let you pass like that? Hell no! We held on!
I am tired, it’s just like this rest at Reffuveille didn’t even happened. Our objective is still not reached and we continue to loose peoples.

[July 30 1944]
Just a classic day, we crossed a river at this village “La Seyeria” no much resistance today, it give me too much time to think about what happened 2 days ago.

[August 1st 1944]
We entered “Villedieu-les-poeles” today after a long fight. In fact I just saw entrance, the tank with us was knock out by an AT gun. At first we had to secure the east of the village which was the main objective of the 4th Infantry Div. our progress are very low.

Tree tanks were lost due to AT guns and Panzers. Some other Sherman managed to inflict heavy casualty to the enemy armored forces. After that one of the tank commander told us to move to the west of the town to join the rest of the unit. An ennemy column were spotted not far away

[August 2nd 1944]
We reached out the tail of the enemy column around 3am. Our tanks started to shoot at them, and they fired back. It was the apocalypse, the bullets traced in the airs. Impossible to tell which one was friendly or not. The infantry was useless, so to avoid casualties we went out of our M3, and took cover in the tree line behind.
Another M3 was hit on our right. I saw the guys go out, totally disoriented. I crawled to them and managed to guide 3 of them to our position. I don’t know what happened to the rest of the boys.
