Today the workshop smells like 60 years old leaded Italian solder. Restoration of a long lost friend's Davoli A15 DTE-1052-S amplifier. It is in completely untouched condition including tubes, has probably never been touched by pliers or a screwdriver since it left the factory in Parma Italy in about 1960. The original alnico speaker is perfectly centered and sounds woolly warm and yet with a clear touch. In addition to the classic overhaul of electrolytic and coupling caps, the amplifier needs a new output transformer. Hardened cabling and wafer-thin delicate printed circuit boards, at the time still in Bakelite, make it a delicate job. To be continued.

The things that make your job fun, the restoration of a funny 50's Watkins Westminster amplifier. Point to point wiring in a very old fashioned way. It didn't matter back in those days that it took a little more time !

Home-wound drop-in replacment transformer for Ruben's Matchless Spitfire. Original transformer was a 115V/60Hz version for the American market. The amplifier is now suitable for 115V and 230V/50Hz networks. PTFE cables in the Matchless tradition. Tie-wraps, however, tying cable harnesses is a profession in its own right! Matchless amps, built to outlast us all!

Today on the workbench, an Acoustic G100T. This amp dates from about 1982. It is a 2 channel full tube amplifier.
I knew these are great amps but it had been a long time since I heard one of them.
It is not often that I am impressed, but this amplifier surprised me a lot. If I had to make a top 3 of the best clean sounding amps, this one is undoubtedly there. The clean sound has a very warm quality and a harmonic richness incomparable with any modern amp, each potentiometer of the passive treble, middle, bass EQ works extremely precisely over the entire range from 0-10. Great design and warm clean sound at its best !

Potentiometers in old Fender, Marshall, ... amps are of a quality rarely encountered in commercial equipment today. The fact that they are sometimes very noisy and difficult to turn is entirely due to all kinds of sprays, dust, grease and air pollution to which they have been exposed for decades.
In a complete overhaul of vintage amps I clean them in an ultrasonic water bath. Ultrasonic cleaning is a process that uses ultrasound (usually from 20-40 kHz) to agitate a fluid and in a very thorough way removes old grease and dirt into the smallest cavity. It is a frequently used process for cleaning lenses and other optical parts, watches, dental and surgical instruments and now also vinyl records.
Look at the color of the water bath after cleaning, it would not surprise me if you can poison rats with it.
After the ultrasonic cleaning the pots are completely noise free, reliable and have the feel of quality new ones.
In addition, vintage amps remain in maximum original condition.
Subject is a 1978 Marshall JMP MkII Master model 100W Lead.
The amp has also had a full re-cap and might well survive its owner ;-) now ! For me it remains a great pleasure to a good job and keep these things alive!

A nice job, the restoration of this very rare Faylon amplifier. Faylon is a Belgian brand that built guitar amplifiers in the 1960s. This is an early model with EL34 power tubes. After 27 years of full-time repairs this is the first example of this type that I encounter. It is in beautiful original condition and we are only going to do the most necessary. A complete re-cap and maintenance of pots, sockets and connectors and the rest we'll keep in original condition. Even some of the original tubes give perfect test results. Hopefully he can quickly return to his proud owner Wim Tavernier
