Private foundations and institutions do more than preserve works of art or engage in philanthropy; they establish the very conditions for art to exist, experiment, produce, and be passed down through generations. At a time when public institutions face growing economic and structural constraints, contemporary patronage is playing a vital role—building vibrant cultural ecosystems, championing artists and curators, commissioning new work, fostering research, and opening dynamic new pathways for public participation.

Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo is one of the world’s most prominent contemporary art collectors, philanthropists, and patrons. Since starting her collection in 1992, she has championed artists, commissioned new works, and built an internationally renowned platform for contemporary culture.
In 1995, she established the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, a leading non-profit institution dedicated to supporting living artists, curatorial research, and public engagement. Expanding her philanthropic footprint across Europe, she founded Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Madrid in 2017 to foster cultural exchanges between Europe and Latin America, followed by Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Venice on the historic Isola San Giacomo (second picture) in the Venetian Lagoon, dedicated to artistic research, site-specific installations, and ecological sustainability.

Jivya Soma Mashe lost his mother when he was seven years old; out of shock he stopped speaking for several years, communicating only by drawing pictures in the dust. This strange attitude soon won him a special status within his community. His talent quickly drew attention in India and he received the country’s highest artistic awards

This summer, the Palácio Duques de Cadaval in Évora, Portugal, presents INDIA, an important exhibition that brings together more than twenty artists working across radically different visual languages — from hyperrealist portraiture to ta***ic abstraction to the animist-rooted paintings of India’s tribal communities.The exhibition is curated by Herve Pedroille and on view through October 25th. Among the highlights of the exhibition include Jangarh Singh Shyam and Jivya Soma Mashe whose work represents deep-rooted animist traditions; Parag Sonarghare’s hyperrealist portraits, reminiscent of Bollywood billboard painting, sit alongside anonymous ta***ic works on paper and pieces by Sosa Joseph, Chano Devi, Osheen Siva, and Siji Krishnan, whose work underscores the strong presence of women artists across both folk and contemporary Indian art. Shine Shivan and T. Venkanna round things out with an unabashed eroticism — the exhibition carries a content advisory for nudity and adult themes.I

Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys brings together more than 130 works by 37 Black American and diasporic artists, offering an expansive look at the couple’s approach to collecting and their support of artists and community. Carpenters Workshop Gallery Los Angeles presents California Poppies, a solo show by Roger Herman that includes ceramics, paintings and functional furniture. New ceramic pieces mix with older paintings, showing the artist’s vibrant, expressionist and experimental style.

Herman has been an important influence on generations of LA-based artists – whether as his student or through studio visits or exhibitions. His spontaneous style that leads to colourful, textural canvases and surfaces of mountains, flowers or landscapes, are never mundane or simplified, but layered, experimental and full of rhythm – exuding an embrace of life, and also of death. The skull is a recurrent theme for Herman. New to the exhibition are a collection of coffee and dining tables. Made with a minimal, iron base, Herman places square ceramic tiles that have been painted in in a variety of colours and images, leaving it so that the owner can move the tiles around to make different compositions. Herman’s work feels timeless – his older works come across as contemporary as the ones made for the show. He never seems to shy away from his instinct, working with a sense of freedom that one can’t help but feel swept up by when experiencing it in person.

Miami-based art collectors Mera and Don Rubell spoke to Simon de Pury for TLmag41: The Art of Collecting about how their love of art turned into a decades-long passion for collecting, why they still get excited about visiting artist’s studios and how collecting has become a true family affair. "I’ve often found that collectors have a very good flair for artists of their own generation. And then they still have a pretty good flair for artists of the next generation. But very often they no longer have the right flair for the third generation coming. And so, your th*****me has a great advantage of being two generations. And hopefully three generations," states Simon de Pury. "Finding talents is so intoxicating. Whether it takes us to Pittsburgh or Margate, the underlying principle is we believe that with a young artist, you should go to where the art is produced. It’s not enough to see it in a fair or a gallery. You have to really meet the artist, talk to the artist, learn what are the factors that allow the artist to make work," replies Don Rubell. "It’s a big privilege what we do. We have a mission. We run two museums. We have a big responsibility running these public museums. But we don’t do it for others, we do it because it is a big joy, a big joy to have done this all these years," concludes Mera Rubell.
