The Power of Words (1984/2021) is a seminal, programmatic work that reveals how, at the age of twenty-eight, the artist was already confronting the political stakes of images. The installation introduces themes central to his practice: the ethics of representation, the tension between words and images, and the viewer’s responsibility in the act of seeing. Created soon after Jaar’s arrival in New York in the early 1980s, the work centers on a photograph of a typewriter whose paper and roller have been removed. Through the empty opening, sixteen press photographs of anonymous figures in moments of crisis are projected. By removing the mechanism of writing, Jaar underscores the limits of language and confronts viewers with the ambiguity and ethical weight of images in a media-saturated world.

From the early Lockheed Lounge to Electra, a new monumental outdoor sculpture, fourteen design pieces by Marc Newson are now on view at the Oscar Niemeyer Pavilion at Château La Coste. As a legendary art collector and patron, Peggy Guggenheim supported modern artists through some of the 20th century’s most turbulent times, including at her gallery, Guggenheim Jeune, where she championed women artists, gave platforms to émigrés fleeing fascism, and operated the gallery as what the exhibition catalogue describes as “a quiet but powerful form of resistance.” Now on view at The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice is an opportunity to see some of the works she presented during those years.

Pinault Collection
A ‘quartet’ of exhibitions featuring Michael Armitage, Amar Kanwar, Lorna Simpson and Paulo Nazareth reflect the Pinault Collection’s belief that contemporary art offers a “privileged space for understanding and reflecting on our times;” this is the first time they are presenting four artists to simultaneously occupy the Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana in an unprecedented way.
